City of South Bend, IN — Department of Public Works
GESC: Central Fire Station & MLK Dream Center Solar PV
HVAC Measures
Veregy engineers inspected the Fire Station and found most of the
HVAC systems to be in fair, but aging condition. It is our
recommendation to repair an "out of commission" air handling unit and
further evaluate chiller and boilers for efficiency improvements.
LED Lighting
Our lighting engineer walked the Fire Station and found 744 light
fixtures that we recommend be upgraded to LED. This scope of work
will realize a quick payback in savings and coupled with a rebate from
the utility, will provide a great return on investment.
Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Center Solar
Veregy recommends installing solar on most of the roofing area to
maximize the amount of carbon offset in the most economical method
The solar produced electricity will also provide a positive cash flow by
offsetting purchases from the utility for the energy consumed at new
MLK Jr. Dream Center. Our team was not able to
access the roof during the site visit due to weather.
Veregy's engineers will field measure the area to
confirm maximum allowable space for solar.
For this response we used the provided 170 x 50
feet dimensions. Veregy will be able to utilize
equipment installed as part of the building project to
carry produced energy to the main electrical switch
gear.
After the maximum amount of solar was placed on
the roof, the design was optimized. The projected
electric generation from this was compared to the
present consumption. The table to the right
summarizes our findings. Below, the layout for the
array can be found. Further information about the
design can be found in Appendix E.
Veregy engineers inspected the Fire Station and
found most of the HVAC systems to be in fair, but
aging condition.
