City of South Bend, IN — Department of Public Works ' .` VER EGY'
GESC: Central Fire Station & MLK Dream Center Solar PV
Technical Approach
NEEDS AND SOLUTIONS
City of South Bend Indiana has reached out to Veregy to provide proposals for the installation of solar
generation systems at the Fire Station and the Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Center, along with other
energy savings measures. South Bend has a resident solar panel manufacturer, Crossroads Solar,
that manufactures quality solar modules. We have modeled the use of their panels and recommend
entertaining the use of their product. Veregy is currently under contract to install Crossroads Solar
modules at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Veregy hires local contractors for all construction
activities; our development team has been in contact with K2 Power Solutions, and we look
forward to working with them on this project.
Fire Station Solar
Veregy recommends installing rooftop solar arrays
to maximize space available on top of the Fire
Station. The solar produced electricity will also
provide a positive cash flow by offsetting purchases
from the utility for the energy consumed by the
building.
Veregy has modeled the location suggested in the
RFQ. The roof layout was replicated in our solar
design software Helioscope along with roof top units,
drains, or other objects that could cause shading.
Site visits confirmed this layout and allowed us to
examine the electrical infrastructure in place. From
here the interconnection to the electrical utility was
looked at for a best practice way of connecting to the
grid.
After the maximum amount of solar was placed on
the ground, the design was optimized. The projected
electric generation from this was compared to the
present consumption. The table to the right
summarizes our findings. Below, the layout for the
array can be found. Further information about the
design can be found in Appendix E.
South Bend Fire Station
1222 South Michigan Street, South Bend IN
Solar Array Size
108 kW AC
Annual Electric Production
166 MWh
Existing Annual
Consumption
465 MWh
Portion Offset by Solar
36%
South Bend Fire Station
'.M
