MARY JANE CHASE: So, in 2001 you had a C. of A. that approved this cedar vinyl shake for the
addition and the upper half of the house; is this correct?
JULIA DESLAURIER: Yes, that is correct.
MARY JANE CHASE: It just seems strange to me that we as a commission would approve of
doing one half of a house.
I have a cedar shake home that was built in 1924. The corners of the cedar shake on my house
do but up together. The cedar shake on my house is drying and the nails do not hold real well
anymore. However, to have this kind of damage you would have had to have something piled there
that would have caused this type of damage to occur.
If you leave your foundation and your wood part exposed properly then you will not have this
kind of damage. The reason for having a foundation extend above the ground to meet the wood part
is so that your soil and your grass can rest on the lower section of your foundation; which in turn,
will keep your wood start from rotting.
! The cedar shake on my house was put on in 1924. Even though the cedar shake on my house
does not look brand new anymore, I wouldn't think of having it replaced.
A further detailed discussion was then held among commission members and Julia Deslaurier
regarding the first C. of A. that she received; given her mistaken belief that she had received
approval to have one half of her house resided, when the addition was done on the back of the
house.
JOHN OXIAN: So then you are saying; that supposedly behind the cedar shake it is rotten because
moisture has collected there? How do you know that?
JOHN TROYER: Behind the cedar shake there is a sub -wall that is one by six. Several of these
sub -walls were rotten. When the upper cedar shake was replaced in those areas, we replaced
extensively the siding boards along there. - ---- -- - --- --- ---
JOHN OXIAN: So in other words, you are saying that you are not going to put your vinyl siding
over this; but, instead you are going to take her siding off and then put up all new vinyl siding?
JOHN TROYER: We want to insulate the walls and put an energy board on them to make them
energy efficient. We will insulate the wall cavities from the outside and then put all brand new
siding on there. This will give you a much tighter and nicer fit. Well, I am not going to replace all
of the old sub -siding. I am talking about all of the one by sixes; just as needed.
JOHN OXIAN: You are not planning on doing anything with the windows, are you?
JOHN TROYER: We are going to just put some new wood trim around the windows on the upper
level. We will use the same wood dimensions and appearance as the original.
JOHN OXIAN: I want to make a motion that this be put into the Standards and Maintenance .
Committee. Let the committee meet with the contractor and get an eyewitness of what they do or
do not really want to do over there.
