where he is. I then turned around and spent $3,000.00 dollars to have the house repainted. The
paint again peeled all the way down to the wood.
This is my contractor, John Troyer, and he expects to find that all of the insulation between the
walls has gotten so wet, that I virtually don't have any insulation there anymore. I have since had
the attic re -ventilated and reinsulated. I have done everything that I can possibly do to stop any
more water damage from happening in the future. I can not stop water damage on the inside of the
i house due to the condition of the cedar- shake on the outside -of the house.
The -walls of the house willnothold paint, even though we followed all of the paint
instructions. I do not know what else to do. I can't afford this kind of expense anymore. I have
paid out more for improvements on the house than what the house originally cost me. I have even
considered moving because of this.
I have pictures of the vinyl cedar shake that is of course on the addition of the house and on the
garage. I also have pictures of the cedar shake that is on the porch or the front fagade of the house
that I will pass around for you to look at.
JOHN TROYER: The lower level part of the house is one of the problems; because, one whole
north section of the house does not have any insulation within the wall cavities. If we blow the
insulation in, then we will have plugs showing; and this will not look good on an historic home.
Once the vinyl cedar shake has been installed, you will not be able to tell from ten feet back
that this is in fact vinyl cedar shake siding.
JULIA DESLAURIER: Even though this vinyl cedar shake is extremely expensive, from my
standpoint with everything that we have gone through so far, I thought that it would be worth it.
JOHN TROYER: The original old cedar shake on the front porch was actually no different than
what was already there that I had to remove to put on the sun room in the back.
JULIA DESLAURIER: I also want to mention that John has done three or four historic home
construction jobs on our block; all of which he has kept in character. He adds things and suggests
_ _ things to me that might end up costing me a little bit more; but, brings back historic character that - - ---
has actually been lost over the years. He is very conscientious about the historic highlights.
JOHN TROYER: I like the historical nature of houses. I mean I see far too many times when they
just try to cover up things that should stay features of the home.
GERALD UJDAK: I believed I stopped over at your home. The second story has what kind of
siding?
-JULIADESLAURIER: That's the vinyl cedar shake.
GERALD UJDAK: When was that vinyl cedar shake put on?
JULIA DESLAURIER: About a year ago when we put on the addition.
MARY JANE CHASE: Is this cedar shake part of the original or is it a replacement?
JULIA DESLAURIER: Not to my knowledge. I know that the Sylvester's had replaced some
pieces.
