DHPA Grant Cycle 1995
9-28-94
PROPOSAL SUMMARY
Project: Investigation - Hardy Manuel Log House
DHPA Priority Area: Archaeological
Project Description:
Surface investigation (and/or possible limited subsurface investigation) of
log structure and its environs in rural St. Joseph County which has been
identified by other historical research to have been part of the first rural
farm community settled by families of African-American ancestry in St. Joseph
County. The "Manuel Log House" is believed to be the only structure which
remains from this settlement. Verification of residential use or evidence of
other original use is desired in further developing preservation plans for
this structure.
The anticipated work product would be a report including text and mapping to
clearly present the data gathered and analytical conclusions of the study.
Comments:
There is existing historical research and data which may serve as foundation
for further investigation. The structure known as the Manuel Log House has
been recorded by students from the architecture Department at Notre Dame
University. This documentation is available in our office.
David B. Duvall, Director - Historic Preservation Commission page 6
