South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -July 20, 2007
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
B. Tax Abatements
continue ...
abatement?
Mr. Lerman: That's for the Council to
decide. If that's something you're
undertaking, certainly you ought to be
studying what is being done in Porter
County. Certainly you ought to be asking
what's being done in the other places. They
offer inducements for companies to come
and invest. They are coming to us. A lot of it
has to do with the historic structure in South
Bend, historic industry in South Bend, there
are a lot of things that are involved in those
kinds of decisions. Obviously, the
economics of the situation, the things that are
involved, I can't answer that question. But it
is a question for the Council and for the state
legislature.
Mr. Inks: I would also add, Ken, you
mention the twenty abatements that are still
in place. Steel Warehouse has been a
growing company for a number of years. It
has been one of the best companies
in the City of South Bend in terms of its
growth, adding jobs, adding investment.
Yes, they have applied for tax abatement, but
they have made good use of it in terms of
growing their business and continuing to
grow. We would strongly support the tax
abatement for Steel Warehouse.
Mr. Peczkowski: I think they can be
rewarded in other ways.
Mr. Downes made a motion to approve COMMISSION FAILED To APPROVE RESOLUTION
No. 2360
43
