South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -July 20, 2007
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
B. Tax Abatements
continue ...
want an industrial base here. That's the only
thing I can say about it. I can go into
specifics about the investment. We've done
this many, many times. Almost every time
we've been here we've done more in terms
of the total investment than we've asked for.
We've hired more than the number of people
we've projected. That's because we're still
investing in this community. To say that this
subsidy, which it is, for the short period of
time is not appropriate, I can understand the
philosophy, but it's not true in the
competitive world. If you want to compete
with other areas, and Steel Warehouse is in
other areas, not necessarily because we want
to be, but that's where our markets are. So, I
can testify first hand what's being done in
Des Moines, Iowa, what's being done in
Chattanooga, Tennessee and other places
where we're located. I hope I'm not being
too passionate about this. If I am, I apologize
for that. I hope people will understand and
approve this abatement.
Mr. Peczkowski: I notice there are twenty
previous abatements. Seven are still in
effect. The program is being worked very
well by this organization. Again,
competitiveness is true all over, and you're
saying that other places give better...
Mr. Lerman: More substantial.
Mr. Peczkowski: Then, I think that's the
issue. You're right. Why aren't we doing
better? Why don't we give you a bigger
42
