South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting —June 28, 2011
The bulk of the dollars the city has been
spending in this district, we've really focused
on those two spines. We tend to bring
projects of scale rather then sprinkle the
money around because the neighborhood is
so small and we want to get things done.
In the past there was an old industrial
building on Lafayette across from the First
Presbyterian Church and Central High
School called Basic Machine. It was falling
apart and the city acquired it. Subsequent to
that the city acquired several abandoned
buildings at the end of West Washington
Street. They were all industrial buildings.
Three years ago we did the Natatorium in
partnership with Indiana University. In
addition to the strengthening of the housing,
what the West Washington neighborhood
needs is a real anchor in addition to the
museum campus.
This facility will strengthen the community
by celebrating cultural diversity through its
provision of a common and accessible space
for community programming, art, and
education. The Center will provide a
gathering place for the West Side community
through its class and meeting rooms, gallery,
and outdoor spaces. It is foreseen this Center
will have a national and international reach,
which will ultimately attract resources from
outside the area and further strengthen the
local community.
The Center and its programs will enhance the
vitality of South Bend's West Side by joining
in partnership with neighboring institutions:
The Center for History, Studebaker National
Museum, Indiana University Civil Rights
Heritage Center at the Natatorium, and the
Salvation Army Kroc Center, all located in
31
