Students have been requesting coupons from businesses for students to use in the City <br />and have had a nice return so far. They can be reached at ND.EDU -Students for <br />South Bend -Discounts. They have also started the "End Hunger" campaign on and off <br />campus which involves not only providing meals but education on future planning and <br />public policy on sustainable food. The Farmer's Market visit with 500 students in <br />attendance was very helpful. AI Kirsits mentioned that he would need to send Claire <br />information on "Unity Gardens" which has been very successful and may be helpful. <br />Tim Sexton talked about a bus trip being planned for students on October 19th that <br />would include visits to Potawatami Zoo, IUSB, Farmer's Market and other community <br />sites. He also spoke about the NE Neighborhood IACT Award for focus on <br />Redevelopment and the neighborhood meetings that give a sense of community and <br />partnership and how well it can work. He also requested everyone to cheer Claire on as <br />she was running this weekend in a 26 mile marathon. <br />NEIGHBORHOODS <br />Matt Costello stated that he was pleased with how things are going in terms of peace <br />and quiet. Students have been responsive to requests for quiet and the cooperation is <br />appreciated. A South Bend Police Officer stopped by just to check with Matt to see how <br />things are going, a very nice young man and this gesture was greatly appreciated. <br />Marguerite Taylor stated that for the last three block parties -Eddy Street Commons - <br />things have been going very well. She held up a flier - NNRO booklet -and said this <br />was the poster child for how to do it right. <br />Ann Puzzello stated that the NE Neighborhood -City receiving an award from the <br />National League of Cities in Denver because of activities with Notre Dame and <br />everyone is very proud of that. There has been some concern over weekend rentals <br />and an attorney is looking into this issue. There are also some "weird" housing going up <br />but all in all things are going well. <br />AI Kirsits inquired if she meant the house that is one block off Howard and Marguerite <br />Taylor answered yes. It looks like a "Lego" house. Mark Kramer responded that the <br />house is actually modeled after an 1800's Georgian Style Row House. It will be 3,000 <br />square feet and is to be sold as a single family dwelling. He had spoken with Todd <br />Galloway, the owner/builder and he is hoping to put in two or three more. Marguerite <br />stated the house was ugly and out of place at the Howard Street and St. Louis' Location <br />but everyone needs to see it. <br />Kyle Chamberlin from the NE Neighborhood asked about the status of the Madison <br />Center and the St. Joseph Medical Center. Response was that regarding Madison <br />Center, no one knows much more than is in the paper right now. St. Joseph Regional <br />Medical Center has given the deeds to the Diocese, demolition is taking place and there <br />will be builders on the new site. Saint Joseph High School is moving ahead. <br />CITY <br />
