REGULAR MEETING
MAY 29, 1990
APPROVE REQUEST OF HOLY CROSS PARISH TO CLOSE VASSAR, FROM
LAWNDALE TO WILBER, IN CONJUNCTION WITH PARISH PICNIC - JUNE 3,
1990
In a letter to the Board, Rev. Don Dilg, CSC, Pastor, Holy Cross
Parish, 1520 Vassar Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, advised that
Holy Cross Parish is planning a Parish picnic for June 3, 1990.
Therefore, they would like to have Vassar Avenue, between
Lawndale and Wilber Avenue, closed from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00
p.m. Rev. Dilg stated that they are planning on renting park
equipment and using the park across the street (Muessel Grove)
for some of the picnic activities. As small children will be
present, it is requested that the street be closed. Mr.
Leszczynski advised that the appropriate City departments and
bureaus have reviewed the request and recommend approval.
Therefore, Mrs. DeClercq made a motion that the recommendation be
accepted and the request be approved. Mr. Leszczynski seconded
the motion which carried.
APPROVE REQUEST OF SOUTH BEND COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION TO
LIFT "NO PARKING" BAN ON TWYCKENHAM AND WALL STREETS IN
CONJUNCTION WITH PROGRAM AT ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL - JUNE 1, 1990
Mr. William M. Przybysz, Principal, John Adams High School, 808
South Twyckenham Drive, South Bend, Indiana, requested that the
ban on "no parking" on Twyckenham Drive and Wall Street near John
Adams High School, be lifted from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on
Friday, June 1, 1990. Mr. Przybysz stated that the school is
holding their Senior Honors Recognition Program and many parents
will be attending. Mr. Leszczynski noted that the appropriate
City departments and bureaus have reviewed this request and
approval is recommended. Mr. Leszczynski therefore made a motion
that the recommendation be accepted and the request be approved
subject to the school notifying residents of the area affected by
this action in advance of the event. Mrs. DeClercq seconded the
motion which carried.
RESCIND PRIOR DENIAL AND APPROVE PETITION FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF A RESTRICTED RESIDENTIAL PARKING ZONE - 500-600 BLOCKS OF E.
EWING
Mr. Leszczynski advised that Mr. Michael P. Meeks, Director,
Division of Engineering, has advised that at the request of the
Petitioners of the 500 & 600 blocks of Ewing Avenue, the Bureau
of Traffic and Lighting reviewed their previous recommendation to
deny the residential parking restriction. Mr. Meeks noted that
the previous calculations were based on a twenty foot (20')
parking space or approximately twenty-nine (29) spaces. Because
of the practicality of parallel parking and the geometry of Ewing
Avenue, only twenty-four (24) spaces can actually be provided.
Using this new figure, a residential parking zone was warranted
in seven (7) out of twelve (12) hours. With this in mind, it is
now the recommendation to approve a restricted residential
parking zone for the 500-600 blocks of Ewing Avenue. Therefore,
Mrs. DeClercq made a motion that the prior denial be rescinded
and the recommendation as submitted today be accepted and the
Petition for the Establishment of a Restricted Residential
Parking Zone in the 500-600 block of Ewing Avenue be approved.
Ms. Humphreys seconded the motion which carried.
AWARD BID - ONE (1) ATOMIC ABSORPTION/EMISSION SPECTROMETER
In a letter to the Board, Dr. John J. Dillon, Director,
Environmental Services, recommended that the Board award the bid
of Perkin-Elmer Corporation, 9855 Crosspoint Blvd., Indianapolis,
Indiana, in the amount of $42,290.00 for the above referred to
equipment. Mr. Leszczynski advised that bids for this equipment
were opened by the Board on May 7, 1990. Upon a motion made by
Mrs. DeClercq, seconded by Ms. Humphreys and carried, the
recommendation was accepted and the bid was awarded.
