South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Rescheduled Regular Meeting –July 14, 2009

6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)

A. Public Hearing

(1) continued…

building that has been vacant for years. It
would be added value because the Center for
History is there, and because of the
Natatorium project. It will allow walking
between all the culture centers in the
neighborhood. We think that it would be
wonderful. I’m in support of it.

MS. DEA ANDREWS: I’m speaking on
behalf of the Near Westside Neighborhood
Organization which last month passed a
resolution wholeheartedly supporting the
acquisition of the Hansel Center property.
They feel that this is the last hope for that
building. And it is an historic building, and a
solid building, despite the things that have
happened to it. We feel very comfortable
with the proposed use for it.

RITA KOPALA: I think, that is the building,
if Notre Dame wants to take that much
interest in it, I would be more than thrilled to
see them for a change put the money into it
and let the city do their thing while Notre
Dame takes care of it.

JEFF GIBNEY: Just for the record, Notre
Dame is putting a substantial amount of
money into the building. City dollars are
going to the façade and the site. The
building itself will be renovated from
individual donations to the University of
Notre Dame. So, they are putting
approximately $750,000 into that property.
And they are working on an endowment and
will maintain it in the future.
7
