REGULAR MEETING JULY 15, 2015 52 <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />APPROVE HIRING, AND SWEARING IN OF PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTERS <br />- DREW NIEDBALA <br />- WAYNE BATTEAST <br />In a letter to the Board, Fire Chief Stephen Cox recommended that the above listed individuals be <br />accepted for employment on a probationary basis with the South Bend Fire Department. In his letter <br />to the Board, Chief Cox stated Drew Niedbala is currently certified as a Firefighter I /II, EMT, and <br />Hazmat First Responder Awareness and Operations through the State of Indiana Department of <br />Homeland Security, and currently works part-time as an on -call firefighter for the Clay Fire <br />Territory. He will be required to attend, and successfully complete, the South Bend Fire Department <br />Recruit Academy when it is offered next. Chief Cox stated Wayne Batteast has completed a twenty <br />(20) week recruit academy successfully and obtained the required certifications of Firefighter 1 and 2 <br />and EMT. <br />Fire Chief Steve Cox welcomed the new Firefighters being sworn in and stated the only thing he <br />wanted to add is to remind them to please remember that while they're discharging their duties, they <br />wear the City logo on their sleeve and represent the City and all Fire and Police personnel. He added <br />please make the citizens and the City proud. He stated Mr. Niedbala will get pinned when he <br />graduates from the academy. Chief Cox stated he is extremely pleased to have both candidates. <br />Upon a motion made by Mr. Jones, seconded by Mr. Taylor and carried, the recommendation to hire <br />the above listed individuals was approved. <br />Mr. John Voorde, City Clerk, was present and administered the Oath of Office to the above listed <br />individuals. Mr. Batteast's family pinned his badge on him. The Board wished them well in their <br />endeavors with the South Bend Fire Department. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />ACCEPT AND APPROVE PROMOTION — KAYLA MILLER <br />Police Chief Ronald Teachman recommended that Patrolman 2 d Class Kayla Miller be promoted to <br />the rank of Patrolman 1St Class effective August 15, 2015. Chief Teachman stated in a letter to the <br />Board that Ms. Miller has successfully completed three (3) years of service with the South Bend <br />Police Department. Upon a motion made by Mr. Taylor, seconded by Mr. Jones and carried, the <br />recommended promotion was approved. <br />APPROVE PROMOTION TO SERGEANT IN SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT — RYAN O'NEILL <br />In a letter to the Board, Police Chief Ronald Teachman recommended that Patrolman First Class <br />Ryan O'Neill be promoted to the rank of Sergeant in Special Assignment with a probationary period <br />of one year, in the Uniform Division, 3`d Detail /Patrol. In his letter Chief Teachman stated PFC <br />O'Neill was sworn on the Police Department on March 22, 2000. Upon a motion made by Mr. Jones, <br />seconded by Mr. Miller and carried, the recommended promotion was approved. Sergeant O'Neill's <br />family members pinned his badge on the officer. <br />APPROVE PROMOTION TO SERGEANT IN SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT — MARTIN MULLINS <br />In a letter to the Board, Police Chief Ronald Teachman recommended that Patrolman First Class <br />Martin Mullins be promoted to the rank of Sergeant in Special Assignment with a probationary <br />period of one year, in the Uniform Division, 3`d Detail /Patrol. In his letter Chief Teachman stated <br />PFC Mullins was sworn on the Police Department on September 14, 2005. Upon a motion made by <br />Mr. Jones, seconded by Mr. Miller and carried, the recommended promotion was approved. Sergeant <br />Mullin's family members pinned his badge on the officer. <br />APPROVE PROMOTION TO SERGEANT IN SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT — HARVEY MILLS <br />In a letter to the Board, Police Chief Ronald Teachman recommended that Patrolman First Class <br />Harvey Mills be promoted to the rank of Sergeant in Special Assignment with a probationary period <br />of one year, in the Uniform Division, 3rd Detail /Patrol. In his letter Chief Teachman stated PFC Mills <br />was sworn on the Police Department on July 17, 1993. Upon a motion made by Mr. Jones, seconded <br />by Mr. Miller and carried, the recommended promotion was approved. Sergeant Mill's family <br />members pinned his badge on the officer. <br />BOARD RECESSES <br />
