(f) Flues may be either round or rectangular. The minimum size shall be <br />not less than 10 inches round or 821 inches by 13 inches rectangular. <br />(g) Transite, vitroliner, aluminum or an equal shall be permissable in <br />lieu of above and shall be compulsory in case of an unlined chimney. <br />(h) It is strongly recommended that all new chimneys be built in strict <br />accordance with the ordinance recommended by the National Board of Fire Underwriters, <br />Article 8 - Building. <br />(a) Where warm -air register boxes, heads, pipes or stacks are to <br />be installed, joists shall be set not less than 16 inches on centers and shall <br />be butted and not lapped. Studding shall be set directly over and under joists, <br />leaving a space of not less than 14 inches between studs and joists. Wherever <br />joists are cut, headers must be put in to support joists. <br />(b) All first story single or sub - floors shall be continuous. In <br />all houses having studded exterior walls, these floors shall be extende4 o the <br />outside sheathing and all spaces between studding shall be closed at the attic <br />line. <br />(c) It is strongly recommended that the attic be tightly floored or <br />ceilings insulated to reduce heat losses. <br />(d) All partition walls (or sections of these walls) in which heat <br />stacks to second or third floor rooms are to be installed, shall be of sufficient <br />size to accommodate stacks required to heat said rooms. <br />PART III. General <br />Article 1 - Regulations Relating to $safety From Fire <br />Section 1. Standards relating to reasonable provisions based on <br />minimum requirements for safety to life and property from fire shall be determined <br />by reference to any and all provisions of other ord_nances of the City of South <br />Bend, statutes of the State of Indiana, and shall in any event be the equivalent <br />or better than the standards of the National Board of Fire Underwriters as contained <br />in pamphlet No. 90 of said organization published August, 1942, together with <br />changes, additions and amendments thereto, if any, and any further publications <br />which may take the place of said pamphlet. <br />- 12 - <br />
