370 Other Supplies
The 1975 budget figure for this item is $20, 000. We are asking for 20, 000
for 1977. We will make a strong effort to reduce our expenditures in this
category. -
This is the account for maintenance items to maintain and operate the entire
Plant. Some examples of the items procurred under this account are.
Grease for pumps & motors, packing for all our various pumps, paint
for buildings and machinery, nuts and bolts, pipe fittings; cleaning
solvent, welding supplies, gaskets, lumber, etc.
371 Chemicals
The 1976 budget figure for this line item is $470, 000. Our request for 1977
is $242, 000. This is a rather sizeable item and, we feel, warrants some
discussion. An important part of the recent Plant expansion program were the
facilities included to remove Phosphorus from the Plant effluent. The
Phosphorus removal facilities were designed to use lime. However, early
during the Plant construction phase it became evident that the lime method
but quite expensive. As we became aware of the magnitude of the chemical
expense facing us, we launched a rather extensive program to investigate
Alternate Chemical methods. Our Laboratory people under the early
guidance of Ten -Ech Environment Consultants carried out this study.
We are currently in the process of changing from the Lime Method to the
Ferric Chloride, under the guidance of our Laboratory people. Our budget
request for 1977 is based on the success of this change over. If we make
this switch successfully it will result in a savings of about $720, 000. This
would be possible had we not launched this investigation back in 1971.
We tabulate below various combinations of Chemical cost figures and follow
this tabulation with some explanations.
