<br />A public hearing was held on the resolution at this time. Council Members
<br />Luecke and Washington made the presentation. Council Member Luecke indicated this
<br />resolution recognizes a group of people who decided they were going to do something
<br />to change the trend of violence in our community. Council Member Washington
<br />indicated we are thankful to all who have taken the time to try and rid our streets
<br />and neighborhoods of guns. They read the resolution. Judge Jeanne Jourdan thanked
<br />the Council for the recognition. She indicated that over 6,000 students have been
<br />reached in class rooms this week. She indicated the South bend Police Department and
<br />the Bar Association were to be commended for their work on this project. Cindy
<br />Eastman, Chairperson of Leadership XX, thanked the Council and every one involved.
<br />Gwen Stein, South Bend Community School Corporation, and Larry Dwyer, United
<br />Religious Community, thanked the Council. Police Chief Marciniak spoke in favor of
<br />this bill and commended every one involved in the program. Council Member Kelly made
<br />a motion to adopt this resolution, seconded by Council Member Duda. The resolution
<br />was adopted by a roll call vote of eight ayes.
<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2120 -94 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
<br />BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING CORPORAL THOMAS LESZCZ, CAPTAIN
<br />BRUCE MICHALOS, CAPTAIN JAMES GADACZ AND FIREFIGHTER TOM
<br />ADAMI FOR THEIR HEROIC PUBLIC SAFETY ACTIONS.
<br />WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that
<br />members of the South Bend Police Department are dedicated to providing quality public
<br />service for all of our City residents; and
<br />WHEREAS, often, there are times when members of both of these departments
<br />perform heroic actions in performing their daily public safety duties; and
<br />WHEREAS, on April 2, 1944, there was a house fire at 734 Elmer Street, where a
<br />City resident was trapped in her home; and
<br />WHEREAS, three (3) members of the South Bend Fire Department placed their own
<br />lives in danger when they successfully rescued this individual from her burning
<br />residence, and a member of the South Bend Police Department immediately perform CPR
<br />on her.
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend,
<br />Indiana, as follows:
<br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, hereby
<br />publicly commends, on behalf of all the residents of the City, the following
<br />individuals for their heroic public safety efforts performed on April 2, 1994:
<br />Corporal Thomas Leszcz of the South Bend Police Department
<br />Captain Bruce Michalos of the South Bend Fire Department
<br />Captain James Cadacz of the South Bend Fire Department
<br />Firefighter Tom Adami of the South Bend Fire Department
<br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council commends each of these individuals
<br />and the department of which they work for the progressional services which they
<br />provide on a daily basis to our community, for which we are truly grateful.
<br />Section III. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon its
<br />adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.
