A public hearing was held on the resolution at this time. Council Member Ladewski
<br />made the presentation for the resolution. He read the resolution, and presented a
<br />copy to Officer Leszcz. Fire Chief Taylor and Police Chief Marciniak spoke in favor
<br />of the resolution. Council Member Luecke made a motion to adopt this resolution,
<br />seconded by Council Member Duda. The resolution was adopted by a roll call vote of
<br />eight ayes.
<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2121 -94 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
<br />BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING CAPTAIN DAVID YODER AND SENIOR
<br />ENGINEER RONALD SIMONS OF THE SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR
<br />THEIR HEROIC PUBLIC SAFETY ACTIONS
<br />WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that
<br />members of the South Bend Fire Department are dedicated to providing quality public
<br />service for all of our City residents; and
<br />WHEREAS, the Council recognizes that firefighters are trained to react in
<br />emergency situations to provide the best possible service; and
<br />WHEREAS, on April 8, 1994, two (2) members of the South Bend Fire Department
<br />were called upon to provide service to a distraught individual just before he would
<br />have gone over the dam behind Century Center; and
<br />WHEREAS, Captain David Yoder and Senior Engineer Ronald Simons rescued the
<br />individual just before he would have gone over the dam behind Century Center; and
<br />WHEREAS, these two (2) dedicated paramedics and firefighters performed heroic
<br />actions against treacherous water and swift currents; and
<br />WHEREAS, in the words of Battalion Chief Michael Wegenka of the Divers' Rescue
<br />"They got to him a few feet from the edge of the dam. It was a great rescue!"
<br />Now, Therefore, be it resolved by the Common Council of the City of South Bend,
<br />Indiana, as follows:
<br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, hereby publicly
<br />commends, on behalf of all the residents of the City of South Bend, the following
<br />individuals of the South Bend Fire Department for their heroic public safety actions
<br />performed on April 8, 1994:
<br />Captain David Yoder
<br />Senior Engineer Ronald Simons
<br />Section II. The Common Council commends both of these dedicated firefighters
<br />for their heroic deeds and tenacity for successfully rescuing a distraught individual
<br />from the swift currents of the St. Joseph River.
<br />Section III. The Common Council believes that Captain Yoder and Senior Engineer
<br />Simons and just two (2) of the many individuals of the South Bend Fire Department who
<br />are true role models for the youth and citizens of our community.
<br />Section IV. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon its adoption
<br />by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.
