As background for proposing a realistic mayoral salary schedule, I have reviewed the salaries of executive directors of community service organizations in our area. I find that such studies indicate that the Mayor of South Bend presently makes substantially less per year than the Directors of Century Center, Housing Allowance, Project Future, Chamber of Commerce, United Way, the School Superintendent, as well as less than the prosecuting attorney judges, etc. JOHN VORDE At Large The proposed salary schedule for the Mayor only begins to close the gap which now exists between the KATHLEEN CEKANSKI - FARRAND Mayor's position and some of the other positions In Council Attorney our community mentioned above. The positions that I have mentioned are also extremely important ones; however, I feel certain that no one could reasonably argue that any of those positions encompass more responsibilities than the job of the Mayor of South Bend. I have purposely refrained from comparisons of the Mayor's salary with those in the private sector, since the latter generally pay two to three times the present salary of the Mayor.
