Surface Preparation of Steel Components: SSPC-SP 10/NACE 2. <br />b. Surface Preparation of Ductile Iron Components: NAPF 500-03-04/05. <br />(i) System Type: Insulative Coating (Tnemec): <br />(i) Primer Coat: 91-H2O. DFT 2.5 to 3.5 mils. <br />(ii) Finish Coat: Series 971. DFT 100 to 125 mils. <br />(iii) Total DFT: 100 to 125 mils. <br />(ii) System Type: Insulative Coating (Sherwin Williams): <br />(i) Primer Coat: Corothane I Galvapak Zinc Primer. DFT 2.5 to 4.0 mils. <br />(ii) Finish Coat: Heat-Flex 3500. DFT 125 to 150 mils. <br />(iii) Total DFT: DFT 125 to 150 mils (Minimum). <br />5. Execution: <br />a. The CONTRACTOR shall employ only application equipment that is clean, properly adjusted, <br />and in good working order, and of type recommended by coating manufacturer. <br />b. Prior to application of primers and paints, existing coatings shall be removed and surfaces shall <br />be prepared by the CONTRACTOR to receive specified paintings system in compliance with <br />manufacturer's recommendations and specifications of The Society of Protective Coatings as <br />indicated in this specification. <br />c. Apply primer, intermediate, and finish coats to comply with wet and dry film thicknesses and <br />spreading rates for each type of material as recommended by manufacturer and in accordance <br />with SSPC-PA2. <br />d. Coating shall be applied during good weather. Air and surface temperatures shall be within <br />limits prescribed by the manufacturer for the coating being applied. Work areas shall be <br />reasonably free of airborne dust at the time of application and while drying. The manufacturer <br />should be consulted before any accelerators are used by the CONTRACTOR. <br />e. Remove all oil, dirt, grease, soil, salts, welding flux, mill scale, rust, oxides, corrosion by- <br />products, foreign matter, and other soluble contaminants in accordance with SSPC-SP1. <br />f. The CONTRACTOR shall closely adhere to re-coat times recommended by the manufacturer. <br />Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying next coat. Number of coats specified shall <br />be minimum number acceptable. Apply additional coats as needed to provide a smooth, even <br />application. <br />g. All coatings shall be allowed to cure per data sheet before applying the next coat. The <br />CONTRACTOR shall provide adequate ventilation for tank interior to remove solvents during <br />drying phase for each coating. <br />h. The CONTRACTOR shall examine areas and conditions under which application of coating <br />systems shall be performed for conditions that will adversely affect execution, permanence, or <br />quality of coating system application. <br />6. Protection: <br />a. The CONTRACTOR shall take precautionary measures to prevent fire hazards and <br />spontaneous combustion. Remove empty containers from site at completion of each day’s <br />work. <br />b. The CONTRACTOR shall provide drop cloths, shields, and other protective equipment. The <br />CONTRACTOR shall protect elements surrounding work from damage or disfiguration. Any <br />damages that result will be the sole responsibility of the CONTRACTOR, no additional <br />compensation for damages will be made by the OWNER. <br />c. As Work proceeds, the CONTRACTOR shall promptly remove spilled, splashed, or splattered <br />materials from surfaces. The CONTRACTOR shall leave storage area neat and clean at all <br />times. <br />7. Quality Control: <br />a. All dry film thickness readings of the primer on steel surfaces shall be taken, by the <br />CONTRACTOR, prior to the application of successive coats with a nondestructive magnetic <br />type gauge in accordance with SSPC-PA-2. All measurements shall be recorded by the <br />CONTRACTOR for inclusion in the final inspection reports. <br />b. Any areas failing the above tests shall be marked and receive an additional repair until <br />satisfactory results are obtained. <br />c. Dry Coating thickness measurements shall be made using a Magnetic Gauge. Tolerances to <br />be in accordance with SSPC-PA 2, Measurement of Dry Coating Thickness with Magnetic <br />Gauges.
