EXECUTIVE SESSION JANUARY U6,2013 <br />The Board of Public Safety met in the Executive Session on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 8:12 <br />a.m. The meeting was held in the Board Conference Room, 131h Floor, County City Building, South <br />Bend, Indiana, for the purposes specified in I.C. 5- 14- 1.5- 6.1(b)(2)(A)(6)(A). Board President <br />Patrick Cottrell, and Board Members Laura Vasquez, Eddie Miller, John Collins, and Luther Taylor <br />were present. Also present were Fire Chief Stephen Cox, Police Chief Charles Hurley, and Attorney <br />Andrea Beachkofsky. Cottrell, Member <br />S�� <br />Laura Vasquez, Member <br />Me m b e <br />id i,�M i ller, er <br />1— <br />ollins, Member <br />REGULAR MEETING JANUARY 16 2013 <br />The Board of Public Safety met in the regular meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, <br />with Board President Patrick Cottrell, and Board Members Laura Vasquez, Eddie Miller, John <br />Collins, and Luther Taylor present. Also present were Police Chief Charles Hurley, Fire Chief <br />Stephen Cox, and Attorney Andrea Beachkofsky. <br />The meeting was held in the Board Conference Room, 13`h Floor, County City Building, South Bend, <br />Indiana. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />ACCEPT AND APPROVE RECOMMENDATION FOR PROMOTION – JOHN CORTHIER <br />In a letter to the Board, Fire Chief Stephen Cox recommended that Battalion Chief John Corthier be <br />promoted from Battalion Chief to the rank of Assistant Chief of Training effective January 1, 2013. <br />Mayor Pete Buttigieg addressed those present. He stated this is the best part of his job, not only is it a <br />chance for him to recognize an individual who is being promoted but a chance to recognize the <br />whole department and the work that happens day in and day out. Mayor Buttigieg stated that one of <br />the central priorities of this administration is making sure the basics of getting through life for a <br />citizen or a business in our community are so easy they don't have to think about it. He noted that is <br />one of the things the Fire Department does. It's the men and women of the Fire Department that <br />quietly do their work on a daily basis that secures normal life for the people that live in the <br />community. He stated that in the middle of an emergency when somebody is undertaking a life and <br />death situation it is true that good training done right saves lives. He noted one of the reasons the <br />City has had an excellent record in safety (not only for the Firefighters, but also the City has been <br />able to mark a year gone by with zero fire fatalities in 2012) is the result of training done right. <br />Mayor Buttigieg noted that we usually only see the very end result when a job is done right, we don't <br />see the hours and hours of work that go into it. When our firefighters do their j ob well you don't see <br />the hours and hours of training that went into that end result, but it's largely about the training that <br />saves lives and is responsible for a good job done. Mayor Buttigieg noted that it was for this reason <br />
