CITY OF SOUTH BEND: COAL LINE TRAIL (PHASE IIB) 2 <br />WE UNDERSTAND YOUR PROJECT <br />The 400-foot-long improvement for Phase IIB connects the Riverside Trail on the west side <br />of the St. Joseph River, traverses east on the former 1926 railroad bridge over the river, and <br />connects to Coal Line Trail Phase II — a new 12-foot-wide HMA shared-use path along the <br />old rail corridor from North Shore Drive to Angela Boulevard where it completes the linkage <br />with East Bank Trail. <br /> <br />The abandoned railroad bridge rehabilitatfon will replace rail tfes with a concrete deck, use <br />pneumatfcally-placed mortar and inject epoxy to address the pier deterioratfon (spalls and <br />cracking), improve the scour protectfon using Class I riprap, reconstruct beam seats, install <br />elastomeric bearings, partfally remove and embed new reinforcing steel, and replace end <br />bents to restore the structure’s useful life and strengthen the platiorm carrying the trail <br />over the river. Cleaning and paintfng steel will also considerably aid these efforts. <br />PROJECT APPROACH <br /> COAL LINE TRAIL PHASE II <br /> RIVERSIDE TRAIL <br />Riverwalk Trail Connection <br />The structure pavilion, which is located on the <br />decorative sidewalk west of the bridge, will be a <br />great focal point of this project. With its framing and <br />roofing requirements, close oversight of the <br />contractor is critical. <br />Monitor containment for <br />sandblasting & painting bridge over <br />St. Joseph River <br />Waterway MOT is necessary to <br />channelize any traffic away from <br />on-going construction & pier debris <br />Coordinate with Phase II for <br />connection between both projects <br /> COAL LINE TRAIL PHASE IIB
