CITY OF SOUTH BEND: COAL LINE TRAIL (PHASE IIB) 2
WE UNDERSTAND YOUR PROJECT
The 400-foot-long improvement for Phase IIB connects the Riverside Trail on the west side
of the St. Joseph River, traverses east on the former 1926 railroad bridge over the river, and
connects to Coal Line Trail Phase II — a new 12-foot-wide HMA shared-use path along the
old rail corridor from North Shore Drive to Angela Boulevard where it completes the linkage
with East Bank Trail.

The abandoned railroad bridge rehabilitatfon will replace rail tfes with a concrete deck, use
pneumatfcally-placed mortar and inject epoxy to address the pier deterioratfon (spalls and
cracking), improve the scour protectfon using Class I riprap, reconstruct beam seats, install
elastomeric bearings, partfally remove and embed new reinforcing steel, and replace end
bents to restore the structure’s useful life and strengthen the platiorm carrying the trail
over the river. Cleaning and paintfng steel will also considerably aid these efforts.
PROJECT APPROACH
COAL LINE TRAIL PHASE II
RIVERSIDE TRAIL
Riverwalk Trail Connection
The structure pavilion, which is located on the
decorative sidewalk west of the bridge, will be a
great focal point of this project. With its framing and
roofing requirements, close oversight of the
contractor is critical.
Monitor containment for
sandblasting & painting bridge over
St. Joseph River
Waterway MOT is necessary to
channelize any traffic away from
on-going construction & pier debris
Coordinate with Phase II for
connection between both projects
COAL LINE TRAIL PHASE IIB
