City of South Bend | CE Services for Coal Line Trail Phase IIB (Des # 2200199) in the LaPorte District | Page 7LAWSON-FISHER ASSOCIATES LAWSON-FISHER ASSOCIATES P.C.P.C.
PROJECT UNDERSTANDING
Trail Nodes and Access
Northshore Trail Crossing
This node is being constructed during Phase IIA but will require coordination
with the contractor for Phase IIB. This coordination will likely include MOT,
concrete path tie-in points, lighting conduit connections, pedestrian railing
and ADA grading.
Northshore
Riverside Trail Node
This node serves to connect the Riverside Trail and Phase 1 of Coal Line
Trail to this second phase. Here, LFA will focus on inspecting decorative
concrete patterns, placement of foundations for the pre-cast pavilion,
wayfinding sign foundations, water service connection for the drinking
fountain, and bolt patterns/foundations for lighting, benches, trash
receptacles and bollards. Pedestrian MOT is critical at this node as
Riverside Drive and Angela Boulevard are busy corridors. Ensuring clear signage for safe
pedestrian crossings will be paramount.
Riverside
Architectural Features
Architectural features on the project are shown in the diagram below. While
some items are already procured; the remaining items have recently incurred
long lead times, making early shop drawing review imperative to the project
schedule. Also critical is ensuring bolt patterns for the foundations of these
various features procured so that the contractor can proceed with construction
while waiting for the manufacturing and delivery process. Both items will be
emphasized during the Pre-Construction Meeting and will remain focal points
on progress meetings until completion.
Pre-Cast
Pavilion
Benches
and Trash
Receptacles
Decorative
Concrete
All features with the exception of
the Bike Repair Station/Rack, Drinking
Fountain, Limestone Seatwall, Bridge/Path
Lighting and Decorative Concrete are previously
procured materials being stored at Rum Village
and High Street location. We will focus efforts
on Shop Drawing review on the listed
items for procurement.
Limestone
Seatwall Bridge/Path
Lighting
Bike Rack & Repair Station
Bollard and
Swing Gate
Drinking
Fountain
and Dry Well
Wayfinding
Signage
Pedestrian MOT
Riverside Trail is a heavily used trail within the City's trail network. Maintaining
proper detour signage during construction will be an important aspect of
resident satisfaction and maintaining a safe project. LFA will check these
detour signs daily.
ADA Compliance
As a pedestrian facility, adhering to ADA requirements is a crucial component
of the project. LFA worked with the contractor on Phase I to ensure grading
at trail nodes, crossings and other critical areas were met. We will maintain
the same focus during this phase of the project.
Drinking Fountain & Electric Service Point
Similar to Phase I, a drinking fountain is planned for Riverside Trail Node.
Coordination with South Water will be required for service and connections.
Additionally, coordination will be required between Phase IIA and IIB as the
TESCO Service Point on Phase IIA will power the lights on Phase IIB.
Contractor Continuity
LFA will make certain the contractor submits concrete jointing plans, which
will ensure that jointing at each node is consistent between the Phases I, IIA
and IIB of the project.
