The motion
passed.
The next item on the agenda was to review Bill No. 26-91,
which would appropriate $300,000. 00 from the Morris Civic
Improvement Fund.
Katie Humphreys noted that with her were Mr. Steve Edwins
from Minnesota, and Mr. Dan Peroti. Mr. Edwins is from the
architectural firm of Sobik Mathre Sathrun Quambeck Schlink
Edwins (SMSQ) , which is an architectural firm located in
Northfield, Minnesota.
The City Controller noted that the Entertainment District
Board held its first meeting in February of 1991. In
December, fourteen (14) proposals were received from various
architects with the list narrowed to five (5) firms. All
firms were interviewed in March. With the assistance of Mr.
Peroti, Mr. Edwins firm was selected with Mr. Tom Kendrick
acting as the local architect representative.
Bill No. 26-91 requesting that $300,000. 00 be appropriated,
would be utilizing funds from the Morris Civic Capital
Improvement Fund. The primary source of the funding was
$281,539. 00 from Cablevision, with the other monies being
the surcharge charged on the tickets. The appropriation
would be for the first phase of the design work needed for
the renovation.
Mr. Edwins then reviewed the architectural schedule (copy
attached) . The schedule is aimed at opening the facility in
the Fall of 1993 . In the late Spring of 1992 it should be
opened. He noted that they are trying to work closely with
all user groups. He sees the facility as being a symbolic
building which has a natural charm. It should become a
magnet in the downtown to draw people. It was further noted
that 2 .75 million dollars will be raised through private
fund raising.
In response to a question raised by Council Member Ladewski,
the City Controller noted that the old Roma building was the
basic problem with regard to expansion.
In response to a question raised by Council Member Puzzello,
it was noted that a vacation of the alley would be required.
