The main issue from prior to our ownership
Original Barn Demolition
The barn was no longer present when we purchased the
home. When we first heard that the home was for sale,
we looked on Google Maps and saw the barn structure.
We were excited to consider that it could be a wedding
barn, but when we finally saw the property, we saw that
the barn was no longer present.
The description of the former barn area and its remains
at the time of purchase are as follows:
• an uneven pit in the former barn site
• a covered, open side of the garage barn that Barn as it appears on Ttulia website Aug 2013
butted against the previous barn
• a pile of decaying barn wood in the space between where the barn previously stood, and the
back pasture
• a neatly stacked section of barn wood along the north fence line of the property.
• a stack of boulders that had been part of the foundation of the previous barn
What we understood at the time of purchase
The barn was apparently decrepit, fraught with leaks and ridden with carpenter ants. The estimates for
restoration exceeded $100,000. The decision of the previous owner was to have the barn professionally
and safely dismantled. We learned that the barn was dismantled in late 2014, about 8 months prior to
our purchase. The previous family had not yet completed the restoration of the east side of the garage
barn that had butted up to the original barn, so it was exposed to the elements.
There is a disagreement between information we received
from the previous owner and the information on file with
the HPC. Images in the home's HPC file shows more barn
wood than what was present when we first owned, and the
written reports in the file differ from the testimony of the
former owner. The main difference being that the written
report on file indicates it was dismantled in a manner that it
could be reassembled, however, the pictures clearly show
that it couldn't have been, and shows no evidence of
labeling. It also became known to us that the barn was
dismantled without a permit, too.
Site of the former barn (Google 3D)
Conclusions
There were originally structural soundness concerns for restoration, extraordinary financial
requirements requirements for doing so, and the process of dismantling the barn was not in a manner
suitable for reassembling (see the HPC file photos). I am seeking a retroactive COA for this barn
removal
