HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT
May 16, 2016
Hello Commission!
Finally, Spring!? Lots of work being done out there. Mainly landscaping details and tree
trimming. Hard to see past road construction. I have noticed many code issues but luckily
Code Enforcement has been very busy with hearings. Still scheduled this month alone:
621-623 Rex (how this changed to two addresses from its current zoning of SF2?)
228-230 S Michigan St
721 LWE
214 Riley PI
127 Franklin PI
417 Navarre
I was busy last week with the Studebaker Site/ Renaissance District Event. It was a great
event and I am glad that I could participate. Although, we may have to change our
practice of donating my hours for those events as they seem to take longer each time.
Speaking of this Studebaker... We were contacted by Tim Janowiak of the Driver's Club
and Margaret Fosmoe of SB Tribune looking for photos and or drawings of the guard
shack that once stood on Sample. The structure, fence, and four columns were dismantled
by the city (December 2007) with the promise that it would be reinstalled perhaps at
Ignition Park. South Bend Warehousing District (Kevin Smith -Union Station, et al) has
stored the dismantled material for the past 9 years free of charge. They have also
expressed interest in drawings. I found a disc with photos and some rough hand drawings
and dimensions in our demolition files. The photos and drawings were done by DLZ and
was contracted by the city of South Bend. We are treating these as archives and as such,
need to have information request forms completed and approved prior to receiving
copies. Community Investment has been made aware of the material in our archives. St.
Joseph County also expressed some interest in the structure as well.
The wood floor workshop as part of Indiana Landmarks Vintage Green Series went very
well and had 8 attendees.
I was able to tour the Fat Daddy's block and took several photographs which are on file
as well as my report. The building with the most fires is actually the most structurally
sound out of the three with the middle building being completely hollowed out with a
large tree growing through the middle.
Steve Szaday
Preservation Specialist
