29 August Worked on year end location report items for transfers. Interest in the
adaptive re -use of the Avon by Frank Niemiec (Ray Shepardson) and Garth Mason. Frank
actually met with Don Napoli. Greg Schoof on Leland and Portage inquired about a
garage and building codes. Troy (associated with Steve Mihaljevic, Mag Mile, LLC) called
about an adaptive re -use of Marquette as a multi resource/use Community Center; setting
up a NPO to obtain funding. Suggested he "pitch his plan" to the Mayor that evening. He
also mentioned that SBCSC is looking into litigation to "de -list" Marquette as a landmark.
A Board member that I contacted wasn't aware of this.
30 August HPC Special Gifts location report meeting was moved to next Thursday.
South Bend Tribune called about Avon and spoke with Elicia; SBT expressed surprise that
people were interested in adaptive re -use. Met with Mik Perry about his proposed adaptive
re -use of the Avon as the Avon ArtHaus geared to the 18-20 year old set. Meeting lasted 2
hours.
31 August Most of the day was devoted to the Avon and keeping interested parties
apprised of the developments there. Received the COA application for demolition of the
Avon. Contacted all interested parties on that action. Spoke with Tim and Larry about the
17 September meeting. If Frost Engineering does not return our phone calls then a letter
needs to be sent.
3 September LABOR DAY HOLIDAY
4 September Spoke with homeowner Larry Verash who received a letter from John
Oxian to landmark his home on 60900 Dogwood Road. The letter was sent a long time
ago and the house is now only rated Contributing. It had a fire, the roof was replaced and
now it is experiencing foundation issues. Sent him a copy of the Contractor listing and gave
him names and numbers of departments that might be able to help him. Sent the letter to
Frost Engineering requesting information concerning removal of terra cotta. Received a
letter from Lee Insurance requesting the HPC allow the demolition of the Avon building.
Faxed letter and article over to Larry Meteiver. Attended a 4:30 meeting with Elicia of the
East Bank Village merchants concerning the parking across the street for St. Joe grade
school and the merchants wishing to place buildings on that spot for retail.
5 September Staff Reports for the monthly meeting. Discussion with Don Inks
concerning the Avon and the Library's plans and his concerns for the Dean Building and
the Church. It was his opinion that none of the Library plans are firm and the
Redevelopment Commission owns the lot between the Avon and the Friends of the
Library Building. Office Conference Room was the site of the 5:30 meeting of the
Botanical Society's Events Committee that also included Sue Solmos and Liz Maradik to
plan for the fund raising gala on 27 October.
6 September Meeting with Kathy Sobecki concerning the Special Gifts Account Balances.
Concluded work on Staff Reports. Arranged to meet with Troyer and AEP on Friday at
13271 Adams, a County Landmark. AEP wanted to place a street light directly in front of
the house. Met with Julie Johnson of 801 Forest and researched with her the Sanborn
