Jack Smith in Office, co-founder of Southhold and HPC, to help him get the history of his
building at 220 William Street. Scheduled a tour of the building for next Friday. On site
photographic visit to problem house 614 S. St. Joseph and turned it into Joe at Code. He
will make sure the window is boarded up. Said that police found six people sleeping there
and told them "to keep it down". House is in foreclosure so no owner and No Trespassing
Signs. Toured though the River Park proposed NR District Boundaries: the vast majority
of the houses have artificial siding and only a handful are architecturally interesting; about a
dozen have original siding materials. Drove by Navarre Cabin and documented the
shutters on the second floor. David Bainbridge finally left a message stating that the
shutters had not been a priority with the carpenter but now they were installed and work
would begin to repair the broken panes of glass.
29 June Meeting in Office with Daniel Corbin of INDOT about the Leeper Park
Bridge. He was able to connect with the Cole family via the information that I gave him
and the family is checking to see if they have the original plans. INDOT will begin testing
in July to see if the bridge is structurally sound. According to Daniel the bridge was built to
last 75 years and was not designed for four lanes of auto and truck traffic on a major artery.
The worst case scenario will be that the inner steel rings have deteriorated and the bridge
will have to come down and be replaced. The design of the bridge could be similar to the
Wabash Bridge near the George Rogers Clark Park in Vincennes, IN., which is an arched
bridge, and the lights on the current bridge would be re -used. This isn't going to happen
quickly as the SHPO would have to sign off on it as well as the HPC. Daniel and I also
discussed the Nortliside trail extension and the SHPO's directive to prepare a National
Register nomination for River Park. I have not received any communication from Dr.
Glass and it is Daniel's opinion that Dr. Glass doesn't have the authority to require it.
Attended a Departinent Head meeting in the Council Chambers. Topics discussed were
the new security laws allowing for firearms( conceal and carry with permits) in public
buildings , the 2012 Budgets (Same as last year) with a request to maximize fccs; the
County Employee Clinic mud HR issues.
30 June PERSONAL DAY
1 July General Office and Payroll. Follow up with Tom Price and Sue Solmos on
South Bend issues. On site visits for photographs of 1246 E. Jefferson and 1402 East
Wayne Street. Issued two RME-COA for a re -roof and a removal of a dogwood tree.
Spoke with Carl Littrell about the River Park National Register proposal requested by the
SHPO and e-iiiailed a response to Toni Giffin at the DNR.
4 July NATIONAL HOLIDAY
5 July On site visit and photographs with Steve Szaday at 304 S. Twyckenham for
COA and 614 South St. Joseph. Turned in 614 South St. Joseph into Code again as the
window is still open allowing access by vagrants to house. Prepared Staff Report for 304 S.
Twyckenhani. Arranged to meet Dave Mesecar at 834 Park to review project proposal at
10:00 on 6 July.
