Hostetler: It's on the application.
Klusczinski: Continue, please.
Juszczyk: I'm a member of Ambassadors for Christ Church in Chicago and I'm a deacon of the
Church, I'm an adult Sunday School teacher, and I'm also head of the construction department
there and a 3rd year engineering student. When we bought the building in 2001, it was in need of
roof repairs. At that time, we found a gentleman that was comfortable with slate roof repairs,
and over the next couple of years we paid him several thousand dollars and we trucked in slate
that we found and he repaired with copper clips but never really solved the problem. We kept
having different areas of problems. He'd repair over here, then we'd have problems over there.
At the end of the time, he finally said that he can't do anymore repairs to the roof because it
needs to be replaced. He said, I work alone, I'm one man, and it's too big of a job for me. He
gave us some companies to call for estimates, and for an original slate roof to be put back, they
were talking around a quarter million (dollars). And that blew us away, so...
Klusczinski: Can you speck if the quarter of a million was for the patched areas that were
defective, or... ?
Juszczyk: That was for a complete roof because no company would repair it. Everyone that we
brought out said that they could do repairs but could not give us any kind ofguarantee as to
whether this would solve the problem. The only way to guarantee it is to do the whole roof.
Klusczinski: That just sounds to me like they're trying to lobby for the entire job.
Juszczyk: It wasp 't just one company, it was other companies.
Klusczinski: I just want to make one clarification. You live in Chicago, but you're a deacon
stationed in this church here?
Juszczyk: We're both Ambassadors for Christ. Chicago is the mother church, but we have other
churches too.
Klusczinski: Did you come in specifically for this presentation here tonight? Or are you
normally here?
Juszczyk: I came in specf cally for this presentation here.
Klusczinski: Any other questions for the petitioner or staff?
Ujdak: You talk about leaks, do they appear just in one particular area or are you experiencing
leaks all over the building?
Juszczyk: We are experiencing leaks all over the building, but the area that this about is an area
a little bit smaller than this room, and we literally cover the entire area with buckets and garbage
cans collecting water.
Ujdak: The rest of the edifice is relativelyfree of leaks? Relatively?
Juszczyk: Yeah, we have some leaks here and there, but none as bad as that. It's the worst, and
it's not even something that you can see from the street on Washington, it's on the back parking
lot.
Riley: Have you considered applying for grants to help you do the work?
Juszczyk: There's nothing that we would like better than to restore it to the original slate and the
original glory of the building, but we ...we're looking into it, but as of yet we haven't found
anyone that would supply us with grants or funding.
Riley: I've seen a slate roof across the street from us, and I don 't know if they haven't been able
to talk to everybody that could do that kind of work.
Juszczyk: What would happen is that when the man came there, when he'd put the ladder on the
slate to get to the different areas when he'd put his ladder down, the slate would just start
crumbling. Slate just kept falling off and he said, this is just a never ending battle and I can't do
it anymore.
Klusczinski: That's with a ladder, there may be other ways of approaching it. With a boom, or
scaffolding.—That-s just-another_possibility
Juszczyk: With the way that pitch is, you can build scaffolding up but how do you get over?
Klusczinski: To clary also Catherine, you indicated also that it would be acceptable to use an
artificial slate fill in product. Do you have any quotes, or have you explored that option?
Juszczyk: I know from the square footage that it would be into the thousands to do that...
a]
