Smith: The slates you see, you're only seeing half of the tile. Slates are typically 18x12,
what you do is divide that and then subtract two, so you have your head lap and your
exposure.
Sporleder: So you're fixing the individual slates here and there by placing the shields
underneath them as it fits in. The notion of spot doing what you're doing and getting the ice
shield and whatnot underneath here and there, I don't' understand how that works.
Klusczinski: Are you compelled by Code to install ice shield when you're doing a repair?
Smith: Yes.
Klusczinski: Ok, does that answer part of your question?
Sporleder: Not really, but that's ok.
Smith: Ice and water shield is really...
Sporleder: I know what it is.
Smith: It's a definite need on a roof like that.
Sporleder: So eventually you're going to use all new slate? Start from scratch basically and
restructure tear off whatever it is you've just now done? Are you going to use new slate or
artificial or what?
Smith: I'll use new slate, and will be able to re -use the ones that I've used for these
temporaryfixes. They're veryfragile, and very brittle and can just crumble in your hands.
Sporleder: So the original slate is eventually just going to be taken off and thrown away?
Smith: Right.
Sporleder: Ok, I understand now.
Hostetler: I think that what you're dealing with is an in-kind replacement. The reason why it
came to the Commission was due to the asphalts replacing the slates. As that's no longer an
issue, this is basically an in-kind replacement and repair.
Klusczinski: Right. And a future C ofA will come to us when they're ready to do the entire
roof because this is a temporary component.
Hostetler: We could staff approve that because that's essentially a complete tear off and re -
roof with exactly the same materials.
Riley: If you get the money, you're going to do a complete tear off and re -roof?
Smith: Yes.
Sporleder: The first thing that we were dealing with was the round, turret area, but there's
still the whole church to be dealt with, is that going to be done that way?
Klusczinski: The C ofA is for all emergency damage to be repaired.
Smith: All emergency damage will be repaired and to say I can go out and do that in one
time would be ludicrous. It takes a little patience and a lot of time.
Klusczinski: Shawn, a legal question as this is an in-kind replacement, are we obligated to
offer public hearing on this? I'm just trying to expedite it for the purpose of this meeting.
Peterson: No, you don't have to.
Klusczinski: Very good.
Sporleder: Just for your information, I have tried to find the original blueprints and
drawings for the building, but so far they haven't turned up. I need to go down in the church
vault and rummage around in all that stuff and see what I can rummage out.
Herdman: It would save time and money on the building assessment.
Klusczinski: Anyone brave enough to motion?
Patrick: I'll motion. I move that we approve 2007-0904 regarding 101 S Lafayette/302 W
Washington local landmark.
Riley: Second.
Klusczinski: And your motion was to amend the continuance?
Patrick: es. _ - -
- - - - ---
Klusczinski: Because the original C ofA has been changed since last month. And Linda
you're seconding the amended....
Riley: Yes.
Peterson: And does the applicant consent to the amendment?
Greene: Yes.
11
