T Califano: This is our learning curve. It has a screen on it and a window.
J Califano: They're aluminum storms.
Hostetler: They're old aluminum storms. And there's the wood windows on the inside. What
they want to do is get the Kolbe ones that replace both of those items so that you don't have the
aluminum storm windows and you've got this systems replacing the other two systems. The
original window plus the storm.
Klusczinski: All in one.
Sporleder: So, the original windows are wood windows? That's sort of the way that it looks
here.
Hostetler: Yes.
Sporleder: And they're single pane and they're cold? Are they drafty?
T Califano: We haven't been in there a winter yet to say for sure.
Sporleder: So your intention is to put in insulated glass. How do these windows work? They're
just double hung?
T Califano: They're just double hung with an additional mullion. I've learned.
Sporleder: You can get that mullion to go all the way across.
T Califano: A friend of ours owns (?) Wholesale, and he can make it match exactly what it is.
They do the Kolbe and Kolbe windows. They're a distributor.
Sporleder: Ok, and if you did that then you'd take off the aluminum things all together? Can you
tell whether the aluminum storms are original with the frame?
T Califano: I think the ones that are there probably are.
Sporleder: Or have they been installed...?
Chase: I wouldn't say they're original.
Hostetler: I don't think that they're original. I really don't.
Sporleder: Because single pane glass is extremely uncomfortable to live next to.
Klusczinski: Any other questions for the petitioner?
Sporleder: So did we resolve whether or not the aluminum storms and screens are original or if
they were something added? What is the frame work here, is this wood?
T Califano: Yes.
J Califano: Ah, there's the aluminum right here. And that's the window that's back in here?
Sporleder: And if you go...
J Califano: This right here is aluminum.
Sporleder: Let's go back to this picture. The frame around the window is wood?
J Califano: The center post is wood, right.
Sporleder: And the sills are wood?
J Califano: Correct. And they just screwed in the storm, the aluminum storm.
Sporleder: Ok, well you know we're back to this dilemma of making somebody restore single
pane glass because that's what's there, or whether you allow them to put in more comfortable
windows that are more thermally efficient.
Klusczinski: The other thing Joann is that this is a non-contributing house.
Sporleder: Well...
Klusczinski: So there is some latitude there. I'm generally of the mind myself to always
encourage folks to rehabilitate their existing windows.
T Califano: We like the design of the windows and we're glad that Catherine came out and said
that it would be nice to keep that extra little mullion there. Because she's right, it looks neat, it's
not something that you see in all houses. The inside of the house is what really makes it unique,
there's no trim on the inside of the windows the plaster goes all the way around so we really
didn't want to do anything to disturb that. So the replacement is the way that we wanted to go as
not to disturb the inside. It's hard to paint, but it looks neat.
Klusczinski: Any other questions?
Sporleder: Yes, are you intending to do this with all the windows in the house? How many are
we talking about here?
T Califano: I think that there are 24.
Sporleder: And they're all in triplets? Groups of 3?
4
