Very good.
Riley: I make a motion that we approve 2007-0912B.
Klusczinski: Motion has been made is there a second?
Sporleder: I'll second it.
Klusczinski: Made and seconded. Jefferson
Property Owner: Terri and John Califano
Landmark or District Designation: E. Wayne Street LHD
Rating: Non Contributing
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT: This split level ranch was built between
1958 and 1960 by Hazel and Merle Rusk. Mr. Rusk was a salesman with Ben Fefferman
APPLICATION ITEMS: 1. Replace old aluminum windows that have oxidized, are non-functional and
have missing and broken screens and storms with Kolbe wood replacement window insert sashes, not frames.
2. Replace front door and all screen (storm) doors.
EAST WAYNE STREET STANDARDS: II Existing Structures, C. Windows and Doors: Required:
Original windows and doors shall be retained including sashes, lintels, sills, shutters, decorative glass,
pediments, hoods and hardware. When deteriorated beyond repair, they shall be replaced with units and trim
resembling the original. Recommended: Wood frame storm windows and doors painted to match the original
should be used but should not damage existing frames. If new sashes or doors are installed, the existing or
original materials, design and hardware should be used. When metal or storm doors are used they should be
painted, anodized or coated to match the existing. When awnings are used, they should be of canvas material.
Prohibited: Original doors, windows and hardware shall not be discarded when they can be restored and re-
used in place. New window and door openings which would alter the scale and proportion of the building
shall not be introduced. Inappropriate new window and door features such as aluminum insulating glass
combinations that require removal of the original windows and doors shall not be installed.
RECOMMENDATION: 1. The homeowners wish to replace the current original windows with more
efficient and convenient wood replicas. Staff does not recommend approval as the originals are still in good
shape and can be repaired. 2. The homeowners wish to replace a non -original door that is warped and
difficult to open with a design in keeping with the exterior of the house and use a full view storm/screen storm
door to replace one that is not working correctly. Staff recommends approval of this item.
Klusczinski: Thank you Catherine, care to make a presentation?
J Califano: On the door, the door is not original, and it's also hollow core.
Klusczinski: Definitely not original.
J Califano: A full view storm door would add to the look of the house as well. In regard to the
windows, if we wish to, I guess I'm a little confused, if we're able to replicate the original ones, is
there a problem in replacing that? We've done more research since Wayne and Catherine came
out...
Klusczinski: I had one question that might lead to that. The application items are to replace old
aluminum windows that have oxidized and down here under recommendations it says that the
homeowners wish to replace the current original windows with wood replicas. Are we talking
two different window styles here?
3
