RECOMMENDATION: The contractor proposes to apply vinyl siding over the existing asphalt shingles which
were applied over the original clapboards. It is noted on the 1985 survey card that the integrity of this home was
altered -major and was only in fair condition. Its condition did not improve over this 21 year period. While the
application of vinyl siding is not ideal, it will more closely resemble to original clapboards and no original
features are going to be removed. Staff recommends approval with the stipulation that the contractor agrees to
restore the deteriorated drip moldings above the windows that were removed.
Patrick: Thank you. Are the homeowner or contractor present? Will you step up to the podium
please? Please idents yourself for the record.
DePalma: Bill DePalma.
Culp: Bob Culp.
Patrick: And Bob Culp, you are the owner?
Culp: Yes, ma'am.
Patrick: Do I have any questions from Commissioners? Tim.
Klusczinski: I had a question for staff. Is this the right point for that?
Patrick: Actually, this is the point where we question the homeowner or presenters. But if its
germaine to what you're going to ask them?
Klusczinski: Yes. Will you be modifying the window sills with the addition of a third exterior
siding layer to extend below past that?
DePalma: We had plans on building out the existing jamb to actually overlap the j -channel
(unintelligible)
Klusczinski: And the crown contains the drip cap?
DePalma: Yeah. (unintelligible) We're going to re -install those, and like I said we're going to
build out the casement around the windows, so the new wood that sticks out beyond the j -
channel. (unintelligible)
Klusczinski: So you're going to attach a strip to the front nose of the window sill.
DePalma: Yes, I'm going to actually bring the whole window treatment out. Its going to look
exactly like it does now. (unintelligible)
Klusczinski: When you extend the drip cap at the top, you're going to have a different situation I
assume then what you had originally in the house with its first layer of clapboards. For every
inch that you grow it out this way, its about 518 taller, right? To maintain the same drip slope?
DePalma: Yes, its going to up a little, and out a little...
Klusczinski: A couple of inches, right?
DePalma: Huh?
Klusczinski: At least a couple of inches
DePalma: Out to the j -channel would be 1112 inches, or 4 inch on each side, % on the top just to
cover the j -channel. Personally, when we looked at the property to begin with, it looked like the
asphalt siding had been brought into the casing a little bit, it cut off about an inch of it. I was
trying to give (unintelligible)
Klusczinski: Ok, thank you.
Zeiger: I have a quick clarification question then. This application is just talking about applying
siding, but what you're talking about is re -casing the entire window which is additional work
that's not on the application. Additionally then, to just follow up on what Tim was asking, as you
getup towards the top of the soffit, you have a crown mould that meets the soffit. What do you
intend to do with that?
DePalma: We were going to j -channel up to the crown moulding (unintelligible)
Zeiger: So the crown molding will be back behind the j -channel as far as depth?
DePalma: It's about 318 of an inch back, but its not... we could bring it out if that's what we
needed to do. That would entail a little more work than what we expected, but...
Zeiger: We have a picture here dated November 21, 2006 that shows vinyl siding on the house is
that work that's already started that you caught, so this is a retroactive application?
Hostetler: Yes.
Patrick: My question is for Mr. DePalma. Have you looked under that asbestos, asphalt I'm
sorry, asphalt siding to see what the condition of the wood is underneath?
0
