DePalma: Just on the parts where its fallen off. I thought that would be the best place to loop
They'd already been offfor a number of months or years or whatever...
Patrick: Could you speak into the microphone please?
DePalma: Where the.asphalt siding has fallen off, and I don't know when it had fallen off, we
looked at those spots since they were exposed, and they were solid, so I assume that the rest of the
property is solid. I didn't go around and check but there are numerous spots around the house
where asphalt siding has fallen off and you can see the clapboards behind it. We, notched into
with a hammer, and it all felt pretty solid to us.
Patrick: So the wood underneath this is in fair condition?
DePalma: On the parts that I saw. If you see on the pictures...
Patrick: Yes.
DePalma: I've got pictures of my own too. There's a big chunk off of the South side of the house,
and that's what I am referring to. As you go on the other side, the north side, where they put in
air conditioning units and you can, you can kinda take the plywood out and see the studs and
everything. It all seemed pretty solid to me.
Patrick: So really if you wanted to, if you weren't an aluminum or vinyl siding contractor you
could remove it and the original wood be restored in your opinion?
DePalma: Oh yeah, there would be some holes to fill. Obviously the house has been added onto
a lot with garages and sheds and whatnot. What our goal was to bring some consistency to it,
and to get it back to looking like a single family house instead of all pieced together. That was
basically my goal. I don't know what's under the additions, they seem to be additions tome. I
didn't really look too close, but with say the flat roof coming off of the back, I don't think that
was originally built on with the house. I don't know what's behind that. I don't know if they did
the asphalt siding when they did the additions to tie it all together to look like the same house?
But, that's my guess.
Patrick: Ok
Chase: The asphalt siding looks bad.
DePalma: Very bad.
Chase: So if you have, assuming that the condition of the wood is fairly decent, because if it
wasn't you'd have deterioration with deterioration locked in with new siding. Is there any
evidence on the inside of the house that deterioration is going through?
DePalma: No.
Chase: Any of the walls?
DePalma: Not at all, the house is pretty solid.
Chase: If this is, in driving by and seeing this, the asphalt is in very bad condition.. Is it wise to
seal this damp siding with another siding and sort of envelop it between?
DePalma: I see what you're asking.
Chase: Over time are you going to be dealing with mold and insects and things?
DePalma: With vinyl siding, its pretty ... it breathes easily I believe. I've installed a lot of it. And
to me, I mean you can nail it tight...
Chase: My question is if you are encapsulating the problem? Instead of taking the problem off
and going with the siding that was there originally. If by putting it over this asphalt, its
deteriorated, its in very bad shape, if you're encapsulating a problem?
DePalma: I don't see it that way, maybe others do, but I really don't ... I've done many homes,
and I've always sided over...
Chase: Even really damaged..?
DePalma: We side right over it.
Chase: Right over it, huh?
DePalma: And we don't have any problems.
Chase: Well, I'm wondering if in S years if the owner would have problems.
DePalma: I would know because I manage the propertyfor the owner for a long time after we
sell them the property. I'm pretty confident in it myself. Its made it this long with the asphalt
siding, the clapboards and no insulation. Then somebody insulated the house, and that helps a
lot. I feel pretty secure about it myself.
7
