Jerry: This is northern Indiana, it's tough.
Rom: We just don't one coat. A primer? A primer is to eliminate so many coats of
paint. We just apply the paint, apply the paint and apply the paint until we are satisfied
with the paint. It doesn't matter, if one coat covers beautifully, great, good for us. It may
take seven coats, you know. But, basically the primer sealer it depends upon what
material we are putting it on , if it is a smooth surface and there is no way for us to etch it
to make the paint adhere an oil based primer will go on first and then the paint that we
apply will adhere to it and then we are safe to go with that.
Tim: So, then in this situation you would apply an oil based primer first? First order of
business?
Rom: No, I would not. The exterior paint is an oil based paint. So, it would not need a
primer and plus there is already several layers of..
Tim: But even regular oil based paints need a primer, because the primer is the binder
and it keys into the wood and then...
Rom: No, no, as long as that wood, as long as I expose a layer, if I just brush over this
table with sandpaper, right here, and I put paint on that, that paint's gonna stick as
opposed to just putting paint on there even if I put primer right there. You know what I
mean? As long as I provide an etched material, an etched surface it will adhere.
Jerry: So, basically what you are going to do is scrape as much as you can...
Rom: Yes, we will scrape everything loose...
Jerry: ...and then roughen and rough the surface
Rom: Yes
Jerry: and there will be a mechanical adhesion.
Linda: Well originally you talked about laying vinyl over the sills but now you are going
the scrape and paint the sills and leave it.
Rom: Yes, to preserve the more natural look. We had come to the conclusion. And we
are going to build. Remember how we talked, we were going to cap over the window sills
to where the new dog ear, well you can't see over the bottom (referring to photograph),
but on the lower parts of the window....and we are going to rebuild those...
Tim: There may be two windows that the sills are split lengthwise from expansion or
whatever...
