Director's Report
July 2006
We have attended the last two School Board meetings with other Commission members to
support those Trustees in their efforts to hire a new Superintendent and preserve our
school buildings. I also was able to meet Dr. Zimmerman after his press conference.
We participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Navarre Cabin. We also submitted
the final paper work and reports to close that Grant. We have sent new photographs down
to HLFI to replace ones that we did not think were flattering to the County. Amy
Herdman has accepted HLFFs offer to complete the City Survey of Maps 12 and 13 left by
Jennifer Eblin, HLFFs Senior Surveyor after the fire in her apartment. All of the sub-
grantee reports for the Grants were completed by the Office by their July 10 deadline.
Wayne and I met with ESL- Spectrum concerning the dimensions of the 8 ornamental
lights for the Leeper Park Bridge and approved the revisions to replicate the originals.
We have been providing tax credit information with people in some of our National
Register Districts as well as research on their structures. Also have been in discussions with
a number of Realtor's concerning homes in our local historic districts and the districts'
boundaries. We have fielded a number of residents' inquiries concerning zoning of
student housing in the River Bend and North St. Joseph Street LHDs. The Office also
received a phone call from a resident in River Bend stating that she was circulating a
petition in the neighborhood to revoke the District, that most of the neighborhood had
signed in favor of revoking and what course of action they needed to take to pursue it.
When I spoke with the liaison and others -no one was aware of it. The catalyst for the call
may be the caller's father's desire to demolish his mother's house on Riverside in the River
Bend LHD and my response to him suggesting that he explore repairing the foundation
first.
I have had lunch with Sharon Kendall, Director of Economic and Community
Development and discussed ways in which our departments can work together. I also have
had a meeting with John Wiltrout, Director of Water Works Distribution concerning
COAs for Leeper Park. I have a meeting scheduled with the Mayor and Lynn Patrick on
July 26 to discuss the City Plan, HPC topics concerning the National Register Nominations
and MaryJane Chase's Commission and introduce Amy Herdman.
The entire staff has been working on projects to help promote and raise the profile of the
HPC and position it as a resource center and a positive for the Community. Amy will go
into more detail in her Assistant Director's Report.
I will need a vote by the Commission on Wayne Doolittle attending a conference in August
with his expenses paid from the Commission's budget. Also for approval for the Staff to
attend the Cornelius O'Brien/Main Street Conference in Wabash, Indiana between
September 28-30 and to pay the cost of tuition, room and board and transportation from
the Commission's budget.
