2006 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM PRESENTERS:
Jonathan Hale, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Jonathan is the author of The Old Wav of Seeing, How Architecture Lost Its Magic
(And How It Got It Back). He has been a practicing architect since the early `70's, and
his current works include: Design Guidelines for New Communities in Wilmington, NC
And Spokane Valley, WA, working with teams of non - architect builders. .
John David Mooney, Chicago, Illinois
John David, artist and founder of the John David Mooney Foundation in Chicago, is
known internationally for his large -scale public sculptures that draw their inspiration
from the spirit of place and the consideration of astronomical phenomena. The
importance of the site, its past history and present environment, is acknowledged in his
works. John David attended last years symposium, serving as the summary speaker at the
community design charette. This year, his presentation will trace the relationship of
astronomical phenomena in his recent work and discuss its presence in the architecture of
the world's great civilizations.
Richard England, Malta
The architecture of Richard England occupies a particular niche in the broader history of
Mediterranean Modernism. His work blends traditional Maltese typologies with the
memories of centuries of architecture from the vernacular through to the classical.
Englands's influences range through music, art & literature: all the arts feed into a body
of work which embraces drawing, sculpture and poetry, as well as architecture and
design. Through examples of how his architecture relates to its unique location in Malta,
he will comment on the unique architectural legacy present in New Harmony and how it
might impact future developments.
Richard Demarco, Edinburgh, Scotland
Richard is a professor emeritus of European Cultural Studies, Kingston University, U.K.
He is an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy & honorary Fellow of the
Royal Incorporation of Architects of Scotland. He is the founder and director of the
Demarko European Art Foundation and of the Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh, which
offers an arts experimental summer school in collaboration with Edinburgh University
Schools of Scottish and Experimental Studies. He is a strong proponent of the re-
introduction of ancient design principles in art, architecture and urban design. He will
talk on the power of number and its application to architecture and his vision for New
Harmony in relationship to New Lanark, Scotland.
