1. Palais Royal Signage: 2. Cornelius O'Brien Conference Report
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: You have in your packets the Palais Royal decision from
David Duvall and our good friend in the building department, Chuck. They are waiting
for a recommendation so that we can get this to Mr. Andres so that he knows what he can
or cannot do. We have also included the report from Mary Jane for the Cornelius
O'Brien Conference that was omitted from the last two monthly meeting minutes. (See
green copy in meeting packet).
V. NEW BUSINESS
1. Historic Pipe Organ Survey or Study: 2. Commission Assistant Contract
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: We have a request to see if we would think a historic
pipe organ survey or study should be done in the area.
Joann Sporleder briefly described to commission members what happened at an opening
pipe organ concert that she attended at Norte Dame. She said that several people that
were there, who were knowledgeable about pipe organs, stated that it was too bad a lot of
really good pipe organs, which are mostly in churches, are being pulled out and not being
used because of the cost involved in maintaining them. She suggested that we somehow
pursue at least getting an inventory of the pipe organs that are in the city and possibly the
county that are still in good working condition.
JOHN OXIAN: The best thing to do to get this started is to send a letter to every church
of a certain time period and ask them if they have a pipe organ. Give them history about
it and let them know that we are doing a survey. Then later when you have an idea of
which churches are going to respond; you can then go back and see the amount of work it
will take to get this done. That way you will find out which churches are willing to give
you information and which ones are not willing to give you information. If they are
really interested in their pipe organs, then they will really appreciate who mentioned it to
them. If they are not interested in their pipe organs then they're not going to say anything
to you. If you want to go and look at their pipe organ they may not even allow you to
come in and look at it; because you're dealing with the inside of a building. I think the
first thing you should do is send a form letter to every church and see if they have a pipe
organ and if they would like to give you the history about it. That way you have a basis
to start with and then later you can go back and do the work.
LYNN PATRICK: I think that sounds like a great idea; however, there are professors
out at Norte Dame that are teaching and using pipe organs. Before we go and do a
broadcast letter to those churches why don't we first make a couple of calls to the
professors that are at Norte Dame and ask them what information they have on this.
They may already have this information or at least be able to give us a list of the top ones.
We could also compromise and have Catherine and Julie talk this over and develop what
they think is a good approach and get back with us by our next meeting before they start
to spend a lot of man hours on something.
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: The last thing I have under new business is the
Commission Assist Contract for $3,250.00 from HLFI. The two hundred and fifty dollars
was tacked on because we didn't pay for the Blue Vinyl presentation last year that we
committed to and co-sponsored. The services that they are willing to provide for this sum
of $3,250.00 are the works shops, and the consultative services, etc. We just need to
know if the commission will approve this or not. She suggested that an executive
committee meeting be set up with Bob Yapp to go over the contract with HLFI.
