This meeting will be held at HPC office and will consist of John Livingston, Teresa Sedlack,
and from the Temple Beth El there will be Geoff Newman, David Merkin, and staff, and any
commission members who wish to come. This meeting will be regarding the Temple Beth EI /
Chapin Park boundaries and standards issues.
D. STAFF REPORTS
C of A Approvals; Correspondence: Public Relations WPA/Parks,
Board of Public Works and Landmarking Status Report; Cornelius
O'Brien Main Street Conference in Madison
JULIE SCHUTTE: Staff has approved a few in-kind siding replacements; most of them were vinyl
and vinyl window replacements for vinyl windows. There were several in-kind roof replacements
for flat and shingle roofs.
Staff also approved a temporary roof treatment for 511 South Michigan Street, because it had
gaping holes coming in. The roof that they are putting on is like a shed type roof over this
commercial building and it is not visible from the street, because it slopes down from the parapet
wall back towards the alley way.
Staff also approved the trial use of an order abatement scrubber system in Leeper Park. It is a
system which fits inside a sewer pipe or manhole to reduce the odor that neighbors have smelled in
the park area. This will be a sixty day trial period and they will be coming before the commission to
reapply if it does work.
Staff also approved the cleaning and shrub trimming in a Bronson street alley in Edgewater.
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: In the month of November we put on a presentation to the Parks
Department with Gloria June Griff. She tried to increase the parks department employees'
appreciation of the WPA and the PWA projects. It was very successful. They had a lot of
questions and were very attentive listeners. I think we are going to start working a lot more closely
with some of the people in the Parks Department as a result of this.
Also in conjunction with this, we wanted her to put in a submission for new field resources of
South Bend and St Joseph county proposal for study. We also wanted to know what her estimate
would be so that we could ask for the commission to study this and see if they would like to commit
those funds so that they could be encumbered before year end. (See report enclosed in meeting
packet).
MARTHA CHOITZ: I move that we notify the necessary people that Glory - June Greiff is very
much our choice in handling and having the WPA sites investigated and researched again, and for
her completion of an application for the National Register Listing.
GERALD UJDAK: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: The other item that you have in your meeting packet is about the
lamppost lighting project. The project has been very successful for them and they have been able to
immediately approve fifteen applications in historic districts for these lampposts by using the form
we had proposed to them. They were very happy we were able to cooperate with them and work
with them on getting this done.
