were all hand made and have square heads. We did get an interim protection on this
barn; but, that's running out quickly and we haven't gotten any response back from the
developer or his attorney; so I am at a loss as to what to do. I would like to try and save
the whole farm. The original clapboard siding is still on the house. It has windows that
you can hardly see out of because they are so old. Mr. Oxian rated it many years ago
when he went through and looked at it. He stated in his report that the house was worth-
while in historic value except for the aluminum siding that was on the house. He rated
the barn as outstanding and was in excellent condition. It has integrity and has not been
altered. The historical context statement of significance stated that the barn was
significant for its integrity and style and its association to agriculture and architecture.
The house on the property is older then the barn and has aluminum siding on it. It has six
over six light paneled windows, a nubble stone foundation, a cellar, and other features
that would particularly contribute to the historic character of the property. On the bottom
of the report it states that the property is to be sold and the owners will vacate the
property by May of next year. The new owner plans to use and rehabilitate or restore the
barn. Mr. Sieradzki has not done anything to the barn. There are sumac trees growing up
around it and it is rough looking. There is one beam inside that needs to be restored. I
have talked to several individuals who have volunteered to help restore the barn. I have
also located materials from another old barn in Elkhart that we can use to help restore this
barn as well. I even talked to an organization called "Barn Again", who stated that there
are federal grants available for this kind of project. The barn does not need a lot of work
so I do not know if we would qualify for this grant.
Mr. Janowiak brought in the following items for the commission:
1. A drawing of what the barn presently looks like.
2. Pictures of other old barns located in development areas.
3. A petition with names of individuals who support restoring and saving the barn.
He also gave HPC permission to make copies of the information he presently has on this
barn. He also agreed to write up a list of those individuals and organizations that would
be willing to help support and save the barn.
MARY JANE CHASE: When Mr. Sieradzki bought the property from the original
owner; did he at that time buy the property as a developer or a real estate person?
TIM JANOWIAK: He did inform them that he was a professional developer; but at that
time he stated that he wanted to purchase the property so that he could build his own
home and save the barn for his horses for his children.
JOHN OXIAN: I would like to propose as Chairman of the Landmarks Committee, that
we not only go for the barn; but, if we go down to the county council that we also take in
the house and we take in the proposed lot that he's bringing up before Area Plan. It is
going to be very difficult in my opinion to go in, the way he is subdividing, just for a barn
when you're not going to try to save the house or anything else that fits into the whole
environment. So what I would suggest and also from listening to the meeting we had, in
which I proposed at that time that we go in for the whole thing.
TIM JANOWIAK: I have also approached Mr. Sieradzki and his attorney and have
offered to buy the lot and I can't get a response from them. I would like to buy the lot
and restore it and have it put on the historic landmarks list and go from there. You can
drive around and see bams that are right in the middle of beautiful developments and
what's more American than an old farm or barn. We don't plan on trying to stop Mr.
FA
