#1099 & #1399 04500 - 4
MASONRY RESTORATION
B. Carefully move or remove all equipment, fixtures, conduits, pipe,
fittings, hardware, finish material, or building accessories as
necessary to perform the Work of this section without damage or
disfiguration to the existing materials.
C. Perform mockup standard at designated work area.
3.3 DESIGNATED WORK AREAS
A. When preparation is completed, set up staging or scaffolding
equipment and related provisions in area directed.
B. Assist Owner/Architect representative in inspection from staging or
scaffolding to define and record exact areas of work to be
performed.
C. Keep daily tabulations of actual units of work performed on each
designated work area. Justify these tabulations each day with
Owner/Architect's tabulations to keep a running balance.
3.4 TOTAL RE -POINTING AREAS
A. Cut out 100% of all mortar joints in designated areas to a minimum
depth of 5/8" to 3/4", or deeper if necessary, until sound mortar is
reached. Back of cut out joint must be squared out to a uniform
depth. Diamond -bladed circular saw or circular grinders may be used
providing it has been demonstrated in the sample mockup area that
they can be used without damage to the edges or surface of the
adjacent brick or to other adjacent finish materials. A diligent
effort shall be made to remove the final surface of mortar next to
the existing brick chiseling or scraping off by hand. Continued use
of saws and or grinders is subject to keeping to the standards
established during the mockup approval process. Any brick or other
materials that are damaged during mortar removal shall be replaced
at no cost to the Owner.
B. Square out corners where circular saws or grinders reach the end of
re -pointing areas.
C. Remove all cracked or deteriorated brick and replace with new brick.
Rake new mortar joint to depth of adjacent mortar if in a repointing
area.
D. Remove all dust and debris from cut out joints by brushing or by
pressure blowing air or water.
E. Dampen back of joint and adjacent brick (if not all ready damp from
above operations) with water then allow it to surface dry.
F. New pre -hydrated mortar shall then be packed in thin layers until
the joint is full. Mortar guns may be used providing the nozzle
reaches the back of the joint, mortar is applied in thin layers and
compacted between each layer.
G. After the filled joint has hardened slightly, tool join to a smooth
concave shape with an appropriately sized slicker bar.
H. In hot weather, keep sun off re -pointed areas and keep damp until
initial cure is completed.
