GARY DERBIN: We plan to use the wood trim that is there now; because, I am having
them custom built to be exactly the same size as the original windows.
JOHN OXIAN: My recommendation is that you wrap and store at least one of the
original windows in the garage, so that the owners will have an example of what the
original windows looked like
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: I move we accept application 2004 -0131 as recommended
by staff, and ask that at least one original window be labeled, packaged and stored.
DIANE WROBEL- ILLES: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
The commission decided by consensus to hear C of A 2004 - 0102 -3; 1501 East Wayne
Street as Mr. John Axelberg arrived. He brought a sample of Ecostar faux - slate.
JOHN AXELBERG: We received several quotes for slate shingles ranging from
$80,000.00 down to about $45,000.00. We found a shingle that is made out of recycled
rubber, called Ecostar. The ten inch version of this, (refer to sample brought in by
owner), was only about $3500.00 more than the Grand Manor asphalt shingles, which
was in our initial application.
This weekend we went out and looked at the South Bend Country Club. They
used this type of shingle when they remodeled their clubhouse. We also went and looked
at a house that was off Greenleaf in Elkhart. They used this type of shingle on their roof.
I was very disappointed with the way the shingles looked. The shingles looked less like
slate than a lot of asphalt shingles do. Both of these roofs had single- colored facsimile
slate installations. The shingles were shiny and had no dimension to them.
This type of shingle is also used on all of the new local Teachers Credit Union
branches. They used a very dramatic mix of colors for their roof. One of the colors looks
white. The roof looks like Indian corn to me.
GERALD UJDAK: Have you found some local contractors that will do the work?
JOHN AXELBERG: Yes, we found Vintage Roofing.
JOHN OXIAN: How do some of the other slate replacements in East Wayne Street look?
KAREN HAMMOND -NASH: They were able to salvage eighty percent of the existing
slate and only needed to install twenty percent. Therefore, they decided to use natural
slate.
JOHN OXIAN: I thought other individuals that had replaced their entire slate roofs?
KAREN HAMMOND -NASH: They also used Ecostar. One used Midland Engineering
and the other one used Slatile.
John Axelberg then asked Karen if she could supply him with a list of some other places
that he'could go and look at. Karen stated that she would supply him with a list of places.
John Oxian. The commission members unanimously agreed to have this matter put into
the Executive Committee. John Oxian then told Mr. Axelberg that once he decides what
he is going to do he should let Karen know and she will set up an executive committee
meeting to make a decision on this matter.
