Lincoln Way Highway. They built it for the accommodation of early automobile
travelers on Lincoln Way highway and before there was the development of apparently
many accommodations in the city of South Bend that accommodate our automobile
parking, and after the development of automobile camping.
JOHN OXIAN: What we should do with this instead of messing around with it, is to do
what I told Virginia to do, and that is make it into a landmark and that would stop
anything else from happening.
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: The invitation, by the way, for the next River Park
Neighborhood Meeting, while particularly and especially focused at John, considering he
is an expert on the Lincoln Way highway, is also open in general to anyone else who
would like to attend. The meeting is scheduled for April 3`d, at 7:00 at the River Park
Partnership Center which is located at 2625 North Side Boulevard.
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: Let me also say that the Park Department's efforts
regarding restoration were absolutely heroic; and that if the Park Department is asked to
withhold demolition of the core, then this might actually even save them some money.
Whatever else we can say about them, we should thank them for their efforts to save what
ever they are saving.
E. COMMITTEE REPORTS
1. River Bank Coordinating Committee
Membership & Contact list developed; meeting to be set.
LYNN PATRICK: I received some information from Neil today at the DNR that I have
been waiting for. I called to talk to him about the possibility of getting some more
information from him, and he has just gone on vacation and he will not be back until the
24`h. So, I plan on getting more information from him then.
Basically, as I said, the DNR cannot legally comment about things just for scenic
value. My big concern, and I think Karen's, and a lot people of South Bend, is the
extensive use of riff-raff (broken concrete) around the riverbank. So, I am going to work
and try and find out from Neil what the DNR would like to see better for wildlife and
everything, so that I have something better to go on when I start talking to people about
this project.
After I talk to Neil, I plan on calling all of the people on my list that are interested and
have us get together and have a meeting about this, so we can all be moving in the right
direction. Neil gets back from vacation on the 24`h' He has spent a lot of time working in
the DNR and he is my contact on this matter and I need his expertise before I can proceed
any further. I should have more for you at the next meeting.
2. Leeper Park Beautification Committee
John Oxian made a presentation at the meeting of the Leeper Park Beautification
Committee.
