ROBERT MILLER, JR: I don't think that was replaced when we had the siding put on.
The paint that was there on the siding before was peeling badly and that was one of the
reasons why we needed to have it replaced.
JOANN SPORLEDER: I don't understand these photographs of the cornice piece that
was removed. Where was the cornice piece located?
ROBERT MILLER, JR: I do not know. I would have to let Mr. Barany answer that
question for you, because he would know.
JOANN SPORLEDER: So, I guess the reason why you're replacing the gutters is
actually because they did not catch the rain water that was coming off the roof.
ROBERT MILLER, JR: We replaced the old gutters because they had rusted out. I was
concerned about the new gutters because there was a much larger gap from the tip of the
roof to the gutters than there used to be. It was a very noticeable gap and it seemed to
change the appearance of the house. It was then that I realized that we were not supposed
to do what we did.
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: Also, the gutters now hang mostly under the eaves.
JOANN SPORLEDER: The reason I am asking this is because before I can give you an
approval on anything I would like to really understand what the problem is. From what I
can see the water will not drain into the gutters because of the way the gutters have been
installed. If the water does not drain into the gutters properly it will run back along the
eaves and eventually go under your shingles. So, I think that the gutters should be placed
in a different position with the eaves to stop this problem from occurring.
MR. BARANY: Since these gutters were somewhat smaller than what the original
gutters were, we were left with the question as to installation. Should we go higher or
should we go lower with the gutters? If we go lower with the gutters then we will have to
cover the gap underneath the eaves. If we go higher with the gutters by two inches it
should catch the water that is running off the roof, however, we would then have to do
some filling in underneath the eaves with either extra siding or try and make it look like
part of the gutters.
JOHN OXIAN: How wide were the old gutters that were up there?
MR. BARANY: There used to be eight inch gutters on the house. We have recently
installed six inch commercial gutters on the house which were the largest available and
the largest made until they came up with this example within the last few months or the
last few weeks.
JOHN OXIAN: So, if you put the crown molding back up and you put up eight inch
gutters then you will have accomplished the job, correct?
