My staff recommendation is to do whatever is necessary to restore the good condition
of the gutters. The inappropriate five inch roof gutters should be removed and replaced
with eight inch ogee profile gutters that resemble the size and profile of the original
gutters. Additionally, the wooden molding removed from beneath the original gutters
should be reinstalled or replaced with molding of a similar profile. The installation of
gutter screens, helmet, or covers is left to the owner's discretion.
ROBERT MILLER, JR: I live in the house located at 1120 East Wayne Street. We
started having some work done last summer. We had some windows that were rotting
out so we decided to have the windows replaced. We contacted the HPC and Wayne
Doolittle came out. When the man was putting up the windows he noticed that the siding
on the front, which is near the second floor, was rotting out too. So, we contacted the
HPC and made arrangements to have this replaced. The job was done to our satisfaction.
The fellow that was putting up the siding noticed that the gutters were rusting out. I
did not know who I should contact that would know how to install this type of gutters.
When we were going to have some gutters replaced on the back of the house, the man
informed us that nobody installs that kind of gutters anymore.
I then contacted Mr. Doolittle and he gave me a name of somebody that I could
contact. Since I received this information while it was still winter I did not contact this
man as soon as I should have. When I did call him he came out and looked at the job and
informed me he was not interested in doing the job. I then asked him for a name of
someone else who might be able to do the job and he gave me the.name of Mr. Barany. I
then called Mr. Barany and he gave us a bid that seemed reasonable so I then informed
him he could go ahead and start doing the job.
When he finished the job, I looked at it and my first thought was that the HPC isn't
going to approve of how the gutters look and suddenly I realized that I was doing this in
the wrong order. I then also remembered that I had not contacted the HPC first before
having this work done, and I therefore offer my apology to the HPC for not doing so. I
have always followed HPC guidelines in the past with the exception of this one time. Mr.
Barany is here with not quite the exact samples of what will be used as a replacement for
the gutters.
MR. BARANY: The sample we have here is a larger size of the original gutter. Due to a
shipping error the sample was shipped to me in aluminum instead of galvanized steel.
The company claimed that the sample is now being made in seven and eight inch. The
company also claimed that they do not have any in stock right now and that it would
probably be thirty days until they could get some more in again.
Capacity -wise any one of these sizes would be able to carry the load of water that is
coming off the roof.
JOANN SPORLEDER: After looking at the photographs of the work that needs to be
completed at the residence, Joann asked the following questions.
JOANN SPORLEDER: Why is the paint peeling on the molding?
