This house is unique in the fact that there was aluminum siding put on it prior to the
Historical Society being informed. We were informed that the people who lived there at
the time ran out of money half way through the house. Now the house currently has half
wooden siding and half aluminum siding on the house. Since this has happened, we still
have some of the old storm windows on the wood sided part of the house that are actually
on the exterior of the house itself. On the aluminum sided part of the house, they're
interval to the sash. The windows on both sides of the house are in relatively bad shape.
Even the windows on the inside of the wooden storm windows are in relatively bad
shape. The old storm windows we currently have on the house are the windows that you
can hook on and then take off and store during the summer. Unfortunately, I can only
find half of the old storm windows for the house.
Mr. Zomig and commission members discussed the type, style, and design of the new
replacement windows that he would like to have installed in the house. There was also
some discussion about the two different types of siding on the house and what possible
future plans he has for correcting this problem.
JOANN SPORLEDER: I make a motion that application 2002-0904 be approved with
the following additional criteria as recommended by staff. I would also like to include
Item C, which is the removal of the existing aluminum storm windows.
JOHN OXIAN: I am against approving application 2002-0904 because even though the
wooden storm windows can be attached and detached from the windows of the house,
they should still be considered a part of the house. I also think that the motion being
made should include all ofthe storm windows being removed from the house; not just the
aluminum storm windows.
MARY JANE CHASE: Seconds the motion and the motion carries with one commission
member, (John Oxian), voting again the motion.
B. LOCAL LANDMARKS
1. 602 Euclid Avenue, South Bend; Former Nelson & Son Dairy,
operating 19061918. (This is only a first reading).
2. 1021 Portage Avenue, South Bend, Axtell House, built 1905.
JOHN OXIAN: This property is coming in both as a local landmark and as a listing on
the National Register. For National Register we have to have first and second readings;
but, with an owner's consent we can do both of them tonight or we can do them both at
the same time when we also do national; the first one tonight and the second one next
month.
Sarah Eldred and Jason Jones, (wife and husband): We are the owners of the property
located at 1021 Portage Avenue. We just bought this house in July, and we have done a
lot of work on the house so far. Our main plan for the house is to rehab and to stabilize
