WALTER BERNDT: I am from 730 East Bronson. For about thirty -some years we have
had asbestos siding hanging on the outside of the other siding. I think this problem has
led to some of the deterioration of the other siding. The roof has already been completely
replaced. The rotted boards have all been replaced and the roof has been ventilated We
have addressed the problem with vapor from the inside of the house. We have used the
correct types of paint on the walls that is adequate for vapor barrier according to the
information i got from Historic Preservation last year. As far as I know it wasn't leaking
into the walls when the asbestos siding was on the house. I know the other siding was in
bad shape when we took the asbestos siding off.
During 1964-1967, we replaced some of the rotted boards. We have even painted the
siding many, many times since then, and the paint still continues to peel. We have even
gone to the most popular paints places and we have taken them siding which appears to
be rotted We are not sure if the siding is permeated with some other kind of elements
that we have not been able to get off of the siding. In 1966 or 1967 we took the asbestos
siding off the house. The types of insulation that we currently have in the house are a
spun glass and a pellet type. The last amount of insulation we have put in the house was
done in early May. When we put a new roof on the house the soffits and the overhangs
were rotted out. We have not corrected this problem yet; but, we are planning to correct
it when we do the rest of the work that needs to be done that Karen mentioned earlier.
Discussion was then held among commission members as to whether Mr. Berndt's rotted
wood siding was due to an interior or exterior problem. Members also discussed what
possible solutions may be available to Mr. Berndt to correct this problem.
JOANN SPORLEDER: I make a motion that application 2002-0821 be approved under
the following guidelines:
1. Remove the deteriorated siding and replace with new vinyl siding which shall
be the same size and style as the original wood,
2. All the original existing architectural details around the windows, doors,
porches, eaves shall be retained; except that any rotted wood shall be replaced
with identical trim
3. Gutters shall be re -installed on the eaves when the siding is complete.
4. The ceiling of the porch shall be replaced with vinyl wood siding identical to the
original; and that it be properly ventilated.
5. The original or existing porch pillars shall be retained and appropriate stair
rails replaced.
6. Fix the soffits with appropriate ventilation so that they don't rot out again
CATHERINE HOSTETLER: Seconds the motion and the motion carries unanimously.
4. 2002-0822; 1120 East Wayne Street South; window replacement.
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: The owners seek to remove their original wood window
sashes and replace them with aluminum -clad window sashes.
