(Report from Standards & Maintenance Committee)
MARTHA CHOiTZ: The Standards and Maintenance Committee met at the Tower Bank
Building last week with all the people involved We gave them the mission of going
back to find a more suitable sign that is smaller than the one they had presented to us at
our last meeting. So they are currently working on this and they will be getting back to
us. I think they liked our suggestions and they were willing to cooperate with us as far as
I know. They plan to do some drawings that they will present to the staff, and we will
then have another meeting.
Tonight I would like to make a motion that 2002-0815 be denied for the rooftop sign
on the Tower Bank Building.
MARY JANE CHASE: I will second the motion and the motion carries unanimously.
The reasons for denial of the rooftop sign on top of the Tower Bank Building are as
follows:
1. The size of the sign was inappropriate for the size of the building.
2. Historical Gothic Tower Buildings never have signs on top of them.
3. Our research shows that there was no precedent for signs like these on that?
building or any other building in South Bend or on any of the main gothic structures
in Chicago.
3. 2002-0821; 730 East Bronson Street; siding replacement.
KAREN HAMMOND NASH: The house is in such dreadful shape that some attention
to its porch and siding is imperative. If the house is in fact poorly ventilated causing the
wood siding to deteriorate, then vinyl siding will not solve the underlying problem.
However, vinyl siding would provide relief to the neighborhood from a dilapidated house
and at least a temporary comfort to the inhabitants.
Therefore, staff recommends that the Commission deviate from the Edgewater Place
District Guidelines because of the exceptionally bad condition of the siding and approve
the application with the following conditions:
A. The new siding shall be the same size and style as the original wood.
B. That all existing architectural detail around windows, porches, doors, and
eaves be retained, except that any rotted wood trim be replaced with identical
trim.
C. That the gutters be re -installed on the eaves when the siding is complete.
D. That the ceiling shall be replaced with wood identical to the
original.
E. The original or existing porch pillars be retained & appropriate stair rails
replaced.
F. Repair sorts using adequate ventilation, either with screens or a continuous
ventilation strip across the back.
0
