STRICKLAND HOUSE 333 TONTI
This Dutch Colonial Revival style house was built in 1920 by Elias Strickland, an employee of
the legal department at Studebaker's. Shortly after completing the construction of this house it
was sold, eventually being purchased by Leo and Adelia Cook. Mr. Cook wasa Notre Dame
graduate who practiced law in South Bend in 1919 and served as Deputy Prosecutor from 1942
to 1947. He resided in this house until his death in 1965.
DOMKE HOUSE 1313 LISTON
Adele Domke, widow of blacksmith Frank Domke, constructed this Queen Anne style house in
1911. Mrs. Domke resided here until her death in 1948 at which time the house was inherited
by her daughter, Clara Cordtz and her husband, James, a production manager for Oliver Corpo-
ration.
During this period the Commission also exerted a lot of time and energy into trying to save old
Nuner and Washington Schools. The Historic Preservation Commission in a cooperative effort
with the River Park Neighborhood Association and various local groups and contractors spent a
majority of 2001 fighting to save and reuse both historic schools. However, despite our best
efforts and that of the Association both schools were lost for ever.
NATIONAL REGISTER
In 2001 the HPC reviewed the nomination of a single site and its relocation site to the National
Register of Historic Places.
REMEDY BUILDING 501 WEST COLFAX
This nomination was accepted by the Historic Preservation Commission and recommended to
the Mayor and State Review Board for placement on the National Register. The State Review
Board has reviewed and approved the nomination of this building as well as approved its relo-
cation site.
SECTION 106 COMPLIANCE
The staff reviewed eighty-five (105) environmental review inquiries from the Department of
Economic Development during this period. HPC has maintained its Programmatic Memoran-
dum of Agreement with the SHPO and National Advisory Council to ensure protection of cul-
tural properties which are listed on or qualify for the National Register of Historic Places.
E
