WITWER HOUSE 1031 EAST JEFFERSON/123 NORTH EDDY <br />This property was part of a large tract of land owned by John M. Studebaker. In 1899 Mr. <br />Studebaker commissioned architects, Dirham and Schneider, to design this thirteen room, <br />Queen Ann style house and carriage house. Upon its completion Mr. Studebaker sold the house <br />to his nephew, George M. Witwer. Mr. Witwer was the private secretary to his uncle J.M. <br />Studebaker until his death in 1917 and then served the family as an advisor until 1935 when he <br />resigned from the Studebaker Corporation to devote more time to personal affairs. <br />The following sites and structures are pending as potential Local Landmarks before City Com- <br />mon Council. <br />SHETTERLY/MILLER HOUSE 745 LELAND <br />This Queen Anne Style house was built in 1895 by Annie P. Shetterly-Miller and her husband, <br />Ryell T. Miller. Mr. & Mrs. Miller platted both Shetterly's first and second addition to the City <br />of South Bend in 1889. Mr. Miller started out as a florist and showman, eventually becoming a <br />dentist, a lawyer and a realtor. The Millers resided at this address until their deaths, Annie in <br />1924 and Ryell in 1923. <br />CHESTER STREET - HISTORIC STREET LIGHTS <br />These two lamp posts and street lights are believed to be designed by George Cutter, a lighting <br />designer and manufacturer of great local and national significance, in the late 1920s. These <br />older lights were designed for optimal pedestrian use, and remain essentially unaltered from the <br />1920's and 1930's era when most of the Sunnymeade residents were single -car families who <br />walked or used public transport regularly. These street lights were designed to facilitate a <br />pleasant walk. <br />FIRE ENGINE COMPANY NO.9 2520 MISHAWAKA AVENUE <br />In 1919, as part of a merger agreement between the independent town of River Park, and the <br />City of South Bend, the City of South Bend, in exchange for gaining the additional tax base of <br />River Park, agreed to build River Park a new additional hose house. The Board of Safety chose <br />this location in 1926 and that same year Firehouse no. 9 was built in the Bungalow Style of ar- <br />chitecture. <br />GRACE'S CORSET SHOP 224 WEST COLFAX, <br />This two-story Classical style commercial structure was built in 1921 by two sisters, Edythe <br />and Gertrude Brown. Edythe Brown was a principal of the South Bend Community School <br />Corporation and president of the Elementary Division of the National Education Association. <br />She also wrote a local history text entitled "The Story of South Bend", which was widely used <br />in South Bend Schools. Her sister, Gertrude, was very prominent in local women's organiza- <br />tions and clubs; she founded the New Comer's Club in 1939 to help new residents of South <br />Bend assimilate. For the first twenty-six years of its existence the shop housed Grace's Corset <br />Shop and later in 1928 a Typewriter Company moved in which gave way to the Krueger Phar- <br />macy in 1935. <br />4 <br />
