4. Replacement of rotted boards from a porch.
2. Elm Tree Project, Edgewater Historic District
Regarding the elm tree project, the grant from the Van Buren Association, of which you
have been informed, described in the resolution we just passed. The city gave an
additional grant to pay for shipping expenses for three dozen disease -resistant Native
American Elm trees. The trees are going to be delivered to the city forester and are
expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon.
The city forester intends to spend the next week or so grinding out stumps and
preparing planting locations primarily in the Edgewater neighborhood. A tree planting
ceremony is in the works. Mrs. Voorde has indicated that she will be available to attend
the ceremony in honor of her husband, whenever we decide to have the tree planting
ceremony. Charlotte Pfeifer is available almost anytime on the week of the 22nd, which is
when the forester wants to plant the trees.
The one item we haven't actually nailed down yet is the availability of Mayor Steve
Luecke. As soon as we either know that he is not available or when he is available, we
will then be able to set a date for the tree planting ceremony.
The present plan is for the forester to grind out the stumps and to prepare for planting
in advance of the actual tree planting ceremony in the Mayor Voorde Park. We can get
photos of visiting dignitaries, hopefully including as many members of the Preservation
Commission as are available. We will do some speeches and get photos of people putting
trees in the ground in the park. We hopefully will have a definite date for this ceremony
after this Wednesday; after John meets with Mayor Steve Luecke and lets me know when
he will be available and I will then pick an exact date and send notices out to everybody.
3. Inspector's Report, Warren Township
WAYNE DOOLITTLE: I have more than half of that township done already. The South
Bend Country Club has basically done away with their club house and built a new one.
So the club house no longer looks the way it did in 1916. Members told me when I was
there that the club house was outdated and was in bad shape and needed a lot of repair.
The South Bend Country Club decided to tear down the old clubhouse and build a new
one it its place.
If the weather is nice and'sunny this week, I should be able to get a lot of
photographs taken in Warren Township,
I have also been trying to find a company that can manufacture the Parkview street
light poles. Thornburg is the only one that I have gotten a good response from and they
are located in Illinois, but they have a local representative in Mishawaka with the name
ESL.
This company gave us an idea of what it would cost to replicate these street light
poles. They could manufacture them to look very similar to what we wanted. They
stated that each pole would cost $1600.00 apiece and this price does not include the
actual wiring for the pole. The light poles would be cast aluminum. I talked to Bill Voll
of Sibley, who has since repurchased his former foundry, and he stated to me in our
a
