549 JOANN SPORLEDER: So by building this public school was a large step out of
550 ethnic segregation.
551
552 GERALD UJDAK: This building was originally built to house kindergarten through
553 eighth grade and has seen very little alteration to it over the years.
554
555 RICHARD MORRISON: Am I under the correct impression that the School
556 Corporation wants to maintain parts of Washington School for a maintenance garage?
557
558 JOHN OXIAN: Yes.
559
560 GERALD UJDAK: The portion of high ceiling shops that Ivy Tech added is being
561 considered as a possible place for the maintenance department.
562
563 RICHARD MORRISON: If we recommend Washington School for historic
564 designation will it end up sitting there like Oliver School where the school retains
565 ownership and lets the building fall into ruin.
566
567 GERALD UJDAK: The feeling that Mr. Oxian and I came away with after our meeting
568 with Dr. Raymond was that as far as Dr. Raymond is concerned the front portion of the
569 building will be demolished, period, end of discussion.
570
571 RICHARD MORRISON: So if the Council approves the landmark designation the
572 building is just going to sit there.
573
574 JOHN OXIAN: There is an organization interested in using the facility as a
575 business incubator.
576
577 RICHARD MORRISON: We have no control other then landmark status, the school
578 could choose not to sell and let it sit.
579
580 JOHN OXIAN: The school board can do that, in fact they killed a potentially
581 prosperous redevelopment of Oliver School when Arthur Zigler, a developer from
582 Pittsburgh, should interested in Oliver, Central and various areas of downtown.
583
584 MARTHA CHOITZ: There are a lot of options and interested parties in regards
585 to this building.
586
587 RICHARD MORRISON: What is your relationship with Pat Bauer?
588
589 JOHN OXIAN: I have known Mr. Bauer for many years, he called me the day after
590 the meeting to discuss ideas for Washington and Nuner Schools.
591
592 GERALD UJDAK: I think he wants to see a happy solution to the problems.
593
13
